The Browns didn’t wait long to put their rookie wide receivers at the center of the offense, and the early returns have been encouraging. KC Concepcion, the first-round pick, already leads Cleveland with 10 receptions, while second-rounder Denzel Boston has matched him with a team-high 11 targets. Boston has been even more productive in the box score, leading the Browns with 154 receiving yards and two touchdowns on seven catches.
That production has come with Cleveland’s offense still very much under construction, which makes the first two weeks look even more promising for the young pair. The next step, though, is a much tougher one. In Week 3, the Browns run into a Carolina secondary that can make life miserable for any receiver, let alone two rookies still trying to find their footing.
Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson give Carolina a cornerback duo that looks far more dangerous than the Panthers’ Week 1 scoreline suggests. Carolina was crushed by Chicago, 59 points to 0, but that was mostly a story of the Panthers getting overwhelmed on the ground. The Bears piled up 291 rushing yards and six touchdowns, and that collapse didn’t tell the whole story about Carolina’s coverage talent.
Horn has been one of the league’s better corners whenever health has allowed it, which is why he’s been a Pro Bowler the last two seasons. This year, he’s been moving all over the formation, lining up inside and outside, and handling both spots well. Jackson has quietly become a strong piece for Carolina too, building on the work he did last season and carrying that form into this year.
For Cleveland, the matchup will show plenty about where the passing game stands right now. The Browns are clearly leaning on Boston and Concepcion, and Sunday gives Carolina a chance to hand them a classic welcome-to-the-NFL lesson. It also gives the two rookies a chance to make a statement of their own.
If Boston and Concepcion can keep producing against Horn and Jackson, it would say plenty about how ready they are to shoulder even more of Cleveland’s passing load.
