The Browns have barely finished the preseason, but one rookie has already separated himself from the pack.
KC Concepcion, the first receiver Cleveland took in the 2026 NFL Draft at No. 24 overall, has been named the 2026 recipient of the Maurice Bassett Award. The honor goes each year to the Browns’ most outstanding rookie in training camp, with media members casting the votes.
That lines up with everything that’s been said about Concepcion since camp opened. The Browns’ coaching staff has clearly liked what it’s seen, and the media vote only reinforces the same impression: the 21-year-old has been one of the most impressive players in the building all summer.
Concepcion’s camp has been defined by the same thing over and over again - big plays. He’s looked explosive in Cleveland’s offense, and he’s been the kind of receiver who makes a difficult catch look routine.
At 6 foot and just under 200 pounds, he doesn’t exactly look imposing on paper, but he plays bigger than his frame. The combination of speed, strength and athleticism has made him a real problem for defenders.
The Browns added another receiver early in the draft too, taking Denzel Boston out of Washington in the second round. Even so, Concepcion brings a different kind of value, which is why the investment in him has stood out all summer.
He’s already shown it in games, too. In Cleveland’s first preseason matchup, Concepcion turned a handoff into a touchdown after breaking a tackle, another flash play in a summer full of them.
That’s why he’s expected to have a major role in the Browns’ offense this season and beyond. Even with veteran Jerry Jeudy in the room, Concepcion should be in the mix to emerge as Cleveland’s lead receiver. He’s been compared to Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Zay Flowers, the kind of player Todd Monken helped develop into a 1,000-yard receiver.
The expectation now is that Monken will use Concepcion all over the field, almost like a swiss army knife. He’s the sort of athlete who can change a game with one snap, and the Browns believe he can be a legitimate threat for years to come.
