The Cleveland Browns are in the midst of a significant offensive overhaul this offseason, with a spotlight on revamping their offensive line. However, some areas, like the wide receiver corps and quarterback room, remain untouched. Currently, the quarterback lineup features second-year players Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel, alongside seasoned veteran Deshaun Watson.
Looking at past performances, this quarterback trio hasn't quite hit the mark, which could ultimately cap the potential of the Browns' offense. Sanders, still in his early career, has shown flashes of talent but struggled with consistency, particularly in the latter half of last season. While it's early days, he hasn't yet emerged as a clear QB1 leader.
Dillon Gabriel finds himself in a precarious position. Despite General Manager Andrew Berry's assurances at the NFL combine that Gabriel remains in their plans, his fit within Todd Monken's offensive scheme seems uncertain. Gabriel might not make the cut by the time offseason workouts wrap up.
Deshaun Watson, meanwhile, is striving to make a comeback, given that this is the final year of his contract. The Browns seem poised to move on from him, and Monken appears open to exploring various options.
As for the free agency market, it has seen some movement. Malik Willis secured a lucrative deal with the Miami Dolphins, while Kyler Murray and Tua Tagovailoa have landed new teams.
Geno Smith has returned to familiar territory with the New York Jets. Although the remaining free agents don't offer much excitement, the Browns could still be eyeing other avenues to bolster their quarterback ranks.
One intriguing possibility is a trade for Indianapolis Colts' Anthony Richardson. Despite his limited playing time, Richardson's physical attributes align well with Monken's offensive style. His passing game requires refinement, particularly in accuracy and mechanics, but he has the potential to stretch the field.
Another name in the mix is Tennessee Titans' Will Levis, which might not be a universally popular choice but remains on the table. Additionally, Trey Lance is a potential target if the Browns decide to take a chance on the open market.
While the offseason is still young, and the Browns have yet to make significant moves, they might still be in the hunt for a veteran quarterback to enhance their roster.
