Browns QB Battle May Not Be Over For Dillon Gabriel Yet

Amid quarterback competition in Cleveland, underdog Dillon Gabriel could unexpectedly challenge Shedeur Sanders' path to NFL stardom.

Shedeur Sanders has drawn most of the spotlight in Cleveland’s quarterback battle, but Dillon Gabriel is not disappearing from the conversation.

That’s the view from analyst Lance Reisland, who thinks Gabriel deserves a real look before anyone starts locking in the Browns’ pecking order. Reisland pointed out that Sanders made a bigger splash in his rookie season, but he also said Gabriel dealt with many of the same offensive issues. In his words, “The idea that Dillon Gabriel could emerge as the Browns’ starting quarterback isn’t as far-fetched as some people believe,” Reisland said.

The case for Gabriel starts with the mess around him. Reisland said he had to operate behind an inconsistent offensive line, while the running game and receiving corps didn’t give him enough support.

Cleveland also had trouble consistently moving the ball and putting points on the board. Reisland believes the Browns have addressed a lot of that this offseason by improving the offensive line, adding more help at wide receiver and tight end, and bringing in running back Quinshon Judkins.

“This system is built on finding space and creating opportunities for playmakers,” Reisland said.

Gabriel’s numbers from last season show why he remains part of the discussion, even if he’s not the favorite. He started six games for Cleveland and went 1-5, completing 59.5% of his passes for 937 yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions. A concussion ended his season and cleared the way for Sanders to start the final seven games.

Still, Reisland didn’t go so far as to call Gabriel the frontrunner. “I don’t really care who wins the job,” he said.

“If Deshaun Watson is the best quarterback, he should play. If Shedeur Sanders continues the progress he showed during his starts and earns it, he should play.

And if a new coaching staff and a new system help Dillon Gabriel find a role in that quarterback room, that’s a possibility too.”

The Browns now have four quarterbacks in the mix - Sanders, Watson, rookie Taylen Green, and Gabriel - and that has fueled trade talk around Gabriel. But he’s kept his focus on the work. In April, he said he planned to keep “running my own race and developing each day and getting better.”

Todd Monken has also said Sanders and Watson will keep splitting key practice reps during training camp, which leaves Gabriel with a real opening. If he makes noise in the preseason, he could push his way right back into Cleveland’s quarterback picture.

Bills Star Is Already Testing Browns New Defensive Enforcer

Jared Verse is already drawing attention in Cleveland before he ever takes a snap for the Browns, and that should not be much of a surprise. The edge rusher, acquired from the Rams and projected to be a key part of the Browns defense in 2026, is about to get an early look at how opponents plan to handle him when Cleveland lines up with Buffalo for a joint practice and preseason game.

The first shot came from the other side of the line, with Bills tackle Dion Dawkins adding some pre-practice edge to a matchup that has not been revisited since 2024. Verse and Dawkins know each other from that earlier meeting, and with the two teams set to spend time together before the preseason game, the back-and-forth should make for one of the more closely watched battles of the week. Browns Camp Reps Could Signal A Franchise Defining QB Decision

Training camp is set to bring the Browns' quarterback picture into sharper focus, and the reps already being divvied up this spring have made clear how much is riding on the next few weeks. Head coach Todd Monken still has not named a starter, and the team has spent the offseason evaluating two quarterbacks who have both flashed and faltered in practices and minicamp.

Watson opened with the edge in work, but Sanders has earned more chances too, keeping the competition alive as camp nears. Clevelands decision now feels bigger than a typical depth-chart battle, with the Browns trying to sort through inconsistency while the pressure builds on a move that could shape the franchise well beyond August. College Football's Biggest Shift May Be Making Browns QB Hell Worse

The college game has changed enough that NFL teams are starting to feel it in the draft room, and quarterback is where the ripple effect shows up most clearly. Since NIL money became part of the equation in 2021, more top passers have had a reason to stay in school, and that has thinned out the pool for clubs that are always hunting for the next answer under center. For Cleveland, which has spent plenty of recent draft capital trying to solve the position, the new reality can make a hard search even harder.

A few years ago, the Browns could at least count on the draft cycle to sort itself out by spring. Now, with more elite quarterbacks choosing another season of college football and a deeper group of names potentially lining up for 2027, the wait may only get longer. Cleveland does have the kind of draft flexibility that matters in a market like this, but the bigger question is whether the quarterback it wants will actually be available when the Browns are ready to pounce.
