The Browns walked into the offseason with a pile of uncertainty, and the offensive line sat right at the center of it. Cleveland had to assemble an entirely new starting unit, which left most of the group made up of fresh faces. For the returners, the bar was set low.
Zak Zinter was one of them. The interior lineman has been with the Browns since 2024, and as a third-round pick, he hadn’t delivered the kind of production Cleveland wanted across his first two seasons. That put him in danger of being waived during roster cutdowns when training camp opened.
Instead, Zinter survived to make the 53-man roster.
More than that, he turned himself into a useful depth piece. His rise came after a noticeable jump in training camp and the preseason, where he made enough progress to change the conversation around his spot on the team.
Zinter’s first two seasons produced 22 games played, with 17 appearances as a rookie and five last season. He started only three times, and all of those starts came in his rookie year. The problem wasn’t just opportunity; when he did get on the field, he didn’t look like a dependable lineman.
That changed during camp. At some point, Zinter clearly found another gear and played his way onto the roster. His work over the final two preseason games stood out in particular, drawing praise from head coach Todd Monken and helping seal his place on the team.
For Cleveland, that matters. Offensive line injuries are part of the sport, and having competent backup help can save a season’s worth of headaches. Right now, Zinter is one of the Browns’ key reserve linemen, and the team is counting on that improved play to hold up if he’s needed.
If his number gets called, Zinter will have a chance to prove just how far he’s come.
