The Browns’ first official practice of the 2026 regular season was supposed to come with a clean bill of health. Instead, it quickly turned into a reminder that the offensive line picture can change in a hurry.
Right guard Teven Jenkins exited during the portion of practice open to the media and later showed up on Cleveland’s injury report with a back injury, according to ESPN’s Daniel Oyefusi. Jenkins was listed as limited on Wednesday, and his status has suddenly become one of the biggest questions hanging over Sunday’s season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
That opens the door for rookie Austin Barber, whose name has been building steam for weeks. The third-round pick, a longtime left tackle at Florida, got reps at right guard in Cleveland’s final two preseason games and looked the part for a player trying to force his way onto the field. Working with the second unit, Barber was mostly dominant in both pass protection and the run game.
He entered Week 1 as the Browns’ backup right tackle on the unofficial depth chart, but the push at guard has been obvious. Now, with Jenkins dealing with an injury at the wrong time, Barber may be staring at a real chance to seize the job.
Head coach Todd Monken didn’t give away much when he spoke before Wednesday’s practice, but he also didn’t shut the door on Barber taking first-team reps.
“We’re going to let it play out,” Monken said. “We anticipate Teven being our starting right guard, but again, we’d like to see it play out the rest of the week. … Between your 53 and your practice squad, everybody’s got to be ready to play, because when you go out and practice, you don’t know.”
If Barber does wind up getting the bulk of the work at right guard this week, that would make him the clear name to watch for Sunday.
The caveat, of course, is that his preseason success came against second- and third-string competition from the Bills and Patriots. Even so, the setup around him is favorable if he’s thrust into action. Elgton Jenkins is in place at center, and Tytus Howard is at right tackle, giving the rookie a pair of experienced veterans next to him.
Cleveland is also expected to start rookie Spencer Fano at left tackle and veteran Zion Johnson at left guard.
Monken has already shown a willingness to keep the right guard spot open, unlike the rest of his offensive line. That makes Jenkins’ injury especially significant, even if the Browns are only four days from kickoff.
The timing isn’t ideal, but Cleveland did bolster its depth along the line this offseason through free agency and the draft. And if Barber gets the call, Browns fans could be seeing another piece of that 2026 rookie class on Sunday afternoon.

The Browns have settled their quarterback order for Week 1, and it sends a clear early-season message about how Cleveland plans to begin the year. Deshaun Watson is set to start against Jacksonville, with rookie Shedeur Sanders slotted in behind him and Taylen Green third on the depth chart. Dillon Gabriel, meanwhile, is still on injured reserve and unavailable for the opener.
For Sanders, the placement matters because it puts him in the backup role right away, at least for now, while the Browns head into the season with a defined hierarchy under center. With Gabriel out and Green in the mix as the emergency option, Cleveland has created a quarterback picture that is straightforward on paper but still leaves plenty to watch once the games start and the depth chart begins to matter in real time. With Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars drawing near, the Browns are tightening up the last few personnel calls that usually say a lot about how they see the roster.
