The Browns’ quarterback room has already been one of the messiest stories in the league, and Bleacher Report just threw another name into the mix.
Kristopher Knox floated a “bold” mock trade before Week 1 that would send Dillon Gabriel to Atlanta and bring Tua Tagovailoa to Cleveland along with a conditional 2027 seventh-round pick. It’s the kind of swap that immediately grabs attention because it involves two franchises trying to sort out uncertainty under center.
Tua is the headliner in the rumor, and the numbers attached to him explain why. He’s been linked with 70 turnovers, including 59 career interceptions and a long list of lost fumbles.
Miami still handed him $212 million over four years in 2024 before cutting him and taking on a record dead-cap hit. After that, he ended up in Atlanta on a cheap one-year deal.
Kevin Stefanski wanted a veteran alongside Michael Penix Jr., who is still coming back from a torn ACL, but Tua has not locked down the job. That’s where Gabriel enters the conversation. Stefanski coached him in Cleveland, Gabriel started six games as a rookie in 2025, and he also flashed in the preseason finale against New England before the Browns placed him on injured reserve with a back injury.
Knox’s angle is that Atlanta might need another bridge quarterback if Tua and Penix both stall. Gabriel already knows Stefanski’s offense, and the rumor around the league is that the coach pushed for Gabriel last year even against the Browns’ front office. In that setup, Atlanta would move on from Tua and get a cheap third-round pick who could sit for four weeks.
For Cleveland, though, the idea gets much harder to justify. Deshaun Watson won the camp battle over Shedeur Sanders, Taylen Green is the developmental quarterback the Browns want to evaluate, and adding Tua would only make an already crowded room look even more absurd. Watson is already attached to one of the worst contracts in football, and Tua carries another infamous money crater.
That’s why this is being framed as a thought experiment, not a report. Cleveland wouldn’t have to give up a premium pick, and Atlanta would essentially be paying the Browns to take Tua while sending Gabriel the other way.
But the fit still feels shaky. Gabriel is a 2025 third-round pick currently on IR with a return designation, and swapping him for Tua looks more like a sideways move than a real upgrade.
The stat line from Tua’s 2025 season in Miami tells the story too: 2,660 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. The turnovers followed him, and so did the concussion history. Cleveland has already lived through that kind of quarterback uncertainty.
If the Browns want to move Gabriel, a deal for a seventh-round pick makes more sense than taking on another reclamation project. For now, Watson is the starter, Gabriel is on IR, and Tua is still waiting in Atlanta. The mock trade is loud, but the roster math is even louder.
