Browns Just Gave Fans A Reason To Fear This Fast Start

The Browns' inconsistent play and mounting injuries caught up with them as they faltered against the resilient Jets.

The Browns had been getting away with a lot. On a rainy Sunday at MetLife Stadium, the bill finally came due.

Cleveland fell 17-12 to the Jets, wasting a late lead and seeing its run of fourth-quarter escapes end when the offense couldn’t summon one more miracle. Deshaun Watson put the Browns in front 12-10 with a 29-yard touchdown pass to rookie Denzel Boston and 6:15 left, but that edge didn’t last.

The Jets answered, and Cleveland’s final possession ended with a sack, a fumble, and a four-and-out. The Browns dropped to 3-2, while the Jets moved to 2-3.

The biggest damage came from the self-inflicted kind. Special teams was a mess in the closing stretch, starting with a high snap from Rex Sunahara that slipped through Cory Bojorquez’s hands and cost Cleveland 30 yards of field position. Andre Szmyt also missed his first extra point of the season in the fourth quarter after coming in perfect on kicks, including field goals.

That wasn’t the only blow the Browns absorbed. Rookie wide receiver KC Concepcion exited in the first half with a head injury after taking a violent helmet-to-helmet hit from Jets safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick was flagged twice on the same drive, including for a facemask while making the tackle on Concepcion.

Concepcion’s exit put the focus on Cleveland’s receiver depth, and Isaiah Bond answered with more opportunity. Bond played 43 offensive snaps and finished as the Browns’ leading receiver with 74 yards. Jerry Jeudy, a frequent subject of trade talk, managed only three catches for 19 yards.

The weather never let up, and neither did Cleveland’s running-game problems. The Browns threw it 33 times with Watson and ran it only 24 times overall. Quinshon Judkins was bottled up for 44 yards and 3.1 per carry, leaving the Browns still searching for a ground game that can carry any part of the offense in bad conditions.

There were bright spots on defense, starting with Adin Huntington. The defensive tackle has looked like a real find for Andrew Berry and company, and he backed that up again with a sack for the second straight week, six tackles, and a fourth-quarter fumble recovery. With Mason Graham and Mike Hall Jr. sidelined, Huntington and veteran Maliek Collins gave Cleveland steady work up front.

Quincy Williams also made a huge imprint for Mike Rutenberg’s defense. He forced three fumbles, including one inside the Browns 10-yard line that Ronnie Hickman recovered in the first half. Williams added seven solo tackles, a pass breakup, and a tackle for loss, constantly around the ball.

Still, Cleveland had trouble keeping Garrett Wilson in check. The Jets wideout opened the scoring with a first-drive touchdown and finished with three catches for 70 yards on that drive alone, then went over 100 receiving yards for the game. The Browns had been shutting down opposing No. 1 receivers, and that streak ended Sunday too.

The injury list kept growing as well. Right tackle Tytus Howard was in and out with a knee injury, while No. 2 running back Raheim Sanders left with a hip issue. Linebacker Carson Schwesinger visited the blue medical tent, returned, and later delivered a strip-sack on Geno Smith with less than five minutes left.

But in the end, the Browns had one last chance and couldn’t cash it in. Down five with 1:41 remaining and no timeouts, Watson and the offense went nowhere. Watson was sacked and lost the ball while scrambling on fourth-and-11, and that was that.

Deshaun Watson Just Gave The Browns Another Unwanted Distraction

The Browns were handed another bit of off-field clutter this week when the NFL fined Deshaun Watson and Quinshon Judkins for an illegal celebration during the game against the Steelers. The gesture, which involved pretending to smoke, drew unsportsmanlike-conduct penalties and added one more item to a season already full of noise around Cleveland.

Watson was fined $14,926 and Judkins $14,397, with the leagues decision coming before the Browns Week 5 matchup against the Jets. It is the kind of small but avoidable distraction Cleveland would rather do without, especially when every week seems to bring a fresh reminder that discipline issues can quickly become part of the larger conversation around this team. Todd Monken Just Hit A Nerve With Browns Fans Over Minkah Fitzpatrick

Todd Monkens latest comments landed in a part of Cleveland that still hasnt cooled off. The Browns first-time head coach was asked about the high helmet-to-helmet hit Minkah Fitzpatrick delivered on rookie KC Concepcion during the recent game against the New York Jets, and Monken called it a bang-bang play while saying Fitzpatrick is not a dirty player. It was the kind of measured answer coaches usually give in the moment, but in this case it immediately stirred up plenty of frustration from Browns fans already primed to see the play through a different lens.

Fitzpatrick was not ejected, though he is expected to be fined for the illegal contact, and that only sharpened the reaction around Monkens defense of him. For Cleveland supporters, the issue is not just the hit itself but the memory attached to the player delivering it, which made the coachs choice of words feel especially touchy in the aftermath. In a rivalry that already carries enough baggage, this was a reminder that even a routine postgame explanation can turn into its own storyline. [Read more 🡒]

Ben Roethlisberger Just Handed Browns Fans The Perfect Reminder

Ben Roethlisberger found a way to stir the pot again, even if it was in jest. On a recent podcast, the former Steelers quarterback made a joking comment that suggested he had never lost to the Browns, a line that immediately invites a fact-check in Cleveland, where the franchise has beaten Pittsburgh multiple times and owns a more recent playoff win than its old rival.

For Browns fans, the bigger takeaway might be the reminder that Pittsburghs long-standing mystique has been chipped away more than once in this matchup. Cleveland has won five straight home games against the Steelers, and Roethlisbergers uncertainty about labeling any team a true contender entering Week 5 only adds to the feeling that the AFC Norths old assumptions no longer hold up the way they used to.
