Browns GM Reveals Shedeur Sanders' Path to QB1 Amid Watson's Return Plans

Amidst Deshaun Watson's anticipated return, Browns GM Andrew Berry outlines a strategic path for Shedeur Sanders to solidify his role as QB1, emphasizing growth and adaptability under pressure.

Shedeur Sanders had a challenging rookie season, throwing more interceptions than touchdowns. Yet, the Cleveland Browns are sticking with him, and GM Andrew Berry has outlined the future for Sanders.

Since drafting Sanders in the fifth round last year, Berry has closely monitored his development. Sanders, who started seven games in 2025 after a dramatic draft slide, is at the center of Cleveland's quarterback discussions.

Berry shared his thoughts on Sanders' progress: "The main focus for Shedeur is continued growth. From his first start to his seventh, we saw significant improvement. It's crucial for him to play more efficiently, avoid risky throws, and still create explosive plays when the structure breaks down."

Sanders recorded 1,400 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and ten interceptions. He faced pressure on 52.4% of his dropbacks, the highest rate for any quarterback with more than seven starts last season.

Despite Deshaun Watson's return, the Browns aren't ready to move on from Sanders. Berry emphasized that the Deshaun Watson era isn't over, either: "Deshaun has been working incredibly hard."

Watson's journey with the Browns has been rocky, with a 9-10 record since his 2022 trade from Houston and no full season played since 2020. With his contract ending next season, new head coach Todd Monken is eager to evaluate Watson alongside Sanders and fellow 2025 draft pick Dillon Gabriel.

Holding the No. 6 and No. 24 picks in this year's draft, the Browns might still consider adding another quarterback to the mix.
