The Browns got one major veteran back on the field Monday, and Maliek Collins didn’t waste time making it clear how much it meant to him.
While the buzz in Cleveland centered on Deshaun Watson being named Todd Monken’s starting quarterback this fall, the team also activated Collins from the physically unable to perform list. That move ended a stretch that began with the season-ending quad injury he suffered in Week 15 against the San Francisco 49ers last November.
By Tuesday, Collins was already talking like a player eager to get back into the rhythm of the season.
“It felt good, man. It’s a blessing to be able to get back out there.
I guess it’s been a long journey coming back, but it really ain’t been that long, man. It’s just really been an off-season and just recovering, getting my body back right to be able to go play.”
Collins had been thriving before the injury, working in the middle of a defensive front that included Myles Garrett and rookie Mason Graham. In that stretch, he put together a career-high 6.5 sacks, along with 13 quarterback hits and seven tackles for loss.
Even with those numbers, Collins said the production didn’t tell the whole story.
“It’s probably the most production I’ve had. I don’t think it’s as well as I’ve played, but it’s probably the most productive for sure.
I think I’ve had better film. I think I was super productive, but I think I’ve had better film for sure.”
Now the challenge shifts. With Garrett no longer there to command extra attention from opposing blockers, Cleveland’s defensive line has to redistribute the load. Collins sees promise in the player stepping into that space, defensive end Jared Verse.
“Playing next to Jared has been great. Interaction, seeing him, how he does team stuff, how he is in our room, I think it’s been great.”
Depth behind Graham remains a concern, though Mike Hall Jr. staying healthy would help steady that group. Still, Collins’ return gives the Browns another proven body inside at a time when the defense is going to need more from everyone to help offset Garrett’s absence.
