The Browns’ quarterback competition is about to move from speculation to something a lot more real.
For now, Cleveland still hasn’t settled on a starter, and that answer is expected to come after the joint practices with the Buffalo Bills and the second preseason game. Until then, the race between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders remains open, with both players set to get their chances once training camp opens.
That’s the part that makes this summer different for the Browns. The offense is getting a major overhaul in year two of the rebuild, with changes across the line and the skill positions.
The quarterback room, though, has stayed mostly intact, aside from the addition of Taylen Green. And even with that continuity, Cleveland still hasn’t found a long-term answer under center since returning.
Watson enters the summer with a lot to prove. Sanders does, too, after a rookie season that didn’t do enough to lock down his place in the organization’s plans.
During OTAs and mandatory minicamp, the reports around the competition were all over the place. Some had Watson ahead.
Others pointed to Sanders. A few suggested the battle was too close to call.
What’s clear is that both quarterbacks will have a fair shot once camp begins. What isn’t clear yet is who has the edge.
Head coach Todd Monken hasn’t revealed anything about the starter, and the first real measuring stick won’t come in shorts and helmets anyway. The Bills joint practices should tell a lot more. Once the pads go on and Cleveland is facing another team instead of its own roster, the picture should sharpen fast.
Spring work matters, but only so much. When camp starts, Watson and Sanders are essentially back at square one.
And under Kevin Stefanski, extended preseason work for both would have been unlikely. Monken is in charge now, though, and the expectation is that Watson and Sanders will each get at least a few series in the preseason games.
So the cleanest read on this battle is simple: the Browns are likely to use the Bills practices and the second preseason game as the final exam. That’s the window where the starting quarterback should finally be decided.

Browns First Round Receiver Already Facing A Camp Fight
The Browns rookie class is already sorting itself out before camp even opens, and the clearest path belongs to Spencer Fano and Denzel Boston. Fano is expected to step in at left tackle, while Boston has positioned himself for a starting receiver role, giving Cleveland at least two first-year additions with a straightforward runway into major snaps.
KC Concepcion, though, is entering a different kind of summer. The first-round receiver is in line to compete for a slot role and should still see the field in a crowded wideout room, but the job he wants is not being handed over without a fight. With the Browns looking to lean on depth at receiver, this is the kind of camp battle that could shape how quickly the offense settles in around its new pieces. [Read more 🡒]
These Former Browns Are Suddenly Back In Cleveland's Conversation
Quarterback remains the Browns biggest question mark as the 2026 roster takes shape, and that uncertainty has kept the front office in the market for familiar names who could help in more than one way. The conversation has even drifted back to three former Browns, with Kevin Zeitler, Nick Chubb and Jadeveon Clowney all surfacing as possible fits if Cleveland wants proven pieces rather than another round of projection.
Zeitler would bring the kind of plug-and-play stability that can settle a line in a hurry, especially if Zion Johnson gets off to a shaky start. Chubb, meanwhile, could make sense in a narrower role around the goal line, while Clowneys pass-rush profile would give the Browns another layer of depth off the edge. None of it means a move is imminent, but it does show how quickly old faces can become practical answers when a roster still has a few loud questions attached to it. [Read more 🡒]
