For the Browns, the quarterback room is still the biggest question hanging over the roster. Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders are the names at the center of it, but nobody can say with confidence which one will open the season as the starter. And if recent Browns history is any guide, there’s a real chance this turns into a season where more than one quarterback gets a shot.
Watson’s path back to relevance is one of the major storylines. The question is simple enough: can he deliver a bounce-back season, six years after his last good one?
Sanders brings a different kind of uncertainty. After what the source describes as a poor rookie campaign, the expectation is whether he can make a major leap.
Behind them, Dillon Gabriel and Taylen Green are also part of the mix, even if their exact roles remain unclear.
The current Browns quarterback depth chart lists Watson first, followed by Sanders, Gabriel and Green.
From Cleveland’s point of view, the ideal outcome is pretty clear. The best-case scenario has Sanders winning the job in training camp and showing he can be a starting-level quarterback.
If that happens, the Browns would have a young, inexpensive option heading toward the 2027 NFL draft, which would give the team plenty of flexibility. Watson playing well would also count as a win, though it could leave GM Andrew Berry facing some tricky decisions.
The other end of the spectrum looks familiar, and not in a good way. The source lays out a 2025-style scenario in which Watson, not Joe Flacco, wins the job out of camp, struggles, and eventually gets replaced by Sanders.
From there, Gabriel and/or Green could also get their turns, creating the same kind of quarterback carousel Cleveland dealt with before. It would be a messy season, but it would also help clarify the team’s thinking for the 2027 draft.
Compared with the 2025 version, the Browns’ quarterback group at least has more upside on paper. Sanders and Gabriel have another year of experience, and Watson and Green add more athleticism to the room.
Whether that actually translates into better play is the part nobody can answer yet. At this point, it’s all projection and guesswork.

Browns Fans Are Getting A Powerful New Reminder About Jared Verse
Jared Verse is already giving Browns fans a fresh reminder of why the front office was so eager to add him to the mix. After arriving in Cleveland in the Myles Garrett trade with the Rams, the young edge rusher has quickly looked like the kind of player who can anchor a defense for years, and his early NFL production has only strengthened that view.
A new CBS Sports redraft pushed Verse all the way up to No. 4 overall, a sign of how highly he is being viewed after two strong seasons. The numbers back up the buzz, with Verse ranking among the league leaders in quarterback hurries, pressures and pressure rate, and analysts expect him to keep climbing as he settles into a bigger role with the Browns. Browns Actually Have A Few Contracts Fans Can Finally Feel Good About
With so much of the Browns conversation centered on what they lost, it is easy to overlook the handful of deals that actually look sharp on the books heading into 2026. Cleveland has a few contracts that stand out for the right reasons, and the best of the bunch come from players who have already carved out important roles on defense, giving the roster at least a little stability in a year when that has not always been easy to find.
Alex Wright and Ronnie Hickman are the kind of cost-controlled pieces teams hope to uncover before the rest of the league catches on, and both should matter even more as the Browns reshape the front and back end of the defense. Wright has been productive as a rotational edge rusher, while Hickman has become the sort of versatile backfield presence every coaching staff leans on. The bigger question is how much more Cleveland can get from those bargains if the depth chart keeps shifting around them. [Read more 🡒]
