The Browns are back in the Arch Manning rumor mill, and this time the chatter is coming fast.
According to NFL insider Jason La Canfora, an NFL personnel executive said owner Jimmy Haslam wants the Texas quarterback, even with Deshaun Watson wanting out. The exec put it bluntly: “Haslam wants (Texas QB) Arch Manning, that’s what this is really all about.”
That’s a bold claim, but it isn’t coming out of nowhere. Cleveland has been tied to Manning speculation before, along with former Alabama coach Nick Saban. Haslam publicly tried to cool that talk last year, saying he did not know Manning and believed the quarterback would stay in college.
Manning’s stock has only climbed since then. Texas erased a 23-3 deficit and beat No.
1 Ohio State 24-23, with Manning leading the comeback. But his week has not been quiet off the field.
After Texas’ win, he drew criticism for appearing to laugh at an AI-generated video showing ESPN reporter Holly Rowe being slapped. Manning later addressed the backlash and apologized publicly, and Rowe later broke her silence on the situation.
The Saban angle resurfaced too. ESPN Cleveland’s Tony Rizzo said he had heard Haslam was still chasing Saban for some kind of role in the organization, though not necessarily as a coach.
Rizzo said that idea could even connect with Manning. “I have to say this because I’ve heard a lot of rumors, but I heard Jimmy is not done going after Nick Saban.
Now Nick wouldn’t coach but he would have some kind of role. And to combine him with Arch Manning.
I think that stuff’s all still in play,” Rizzo said.
Cleveland’s own start only adds to the noise. The Browns were beaten 34-10 by the Jacksonville Jaguars, Watson opened the season as the starter, and he was also accused of point-shaving. The franchise is also in the middle of building a new enclosed stadium in Brook Park, set to open in 2029.
None of this means a Manning plan is in place. But between La Canfora’s report, Rizzo’s Saban remarks and Manning’s growing profile at Texas, the Browns are once again being linked to one of the biggest names in college football. And the 2026 season has barely begun.
