Browns Facing Tough Reality After Steelers Signing

Steelers' savvy signing of Jaquan Brisker highlights a critical gap in the Browns' defensive strategy, sparking offseason envy in Cleveland.

The Cleveland Browns have had an offseason to remember, potentially outshining their AFC North counterparts. However, while they've strengthened in several areas, the secondary remains a concern, especially when you consider the moves made by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Pittsburgh, under GM Omar Khan, has been proactive in addressing their defensive backfield, a strategy that might have left the Browns playing catch-up. With the Steelers poised to lose key players like Jabrill Peppers, Kyle Dugger, and Chuck Clark, they acted swiftly, signing Darnell Savage. Yet, it’s the acquisition of Jaquan Brisker that could sting the Browns the most.

Brisker, snagged on a one-year, $5.5 million deal, was a missed opportunity for Cleveland. The Browns, solid at strong safety with Grant Delpit, face uncertainty with Ronnie Hickman potentially leaving in free agency despite a $3.8 million restricted free agent tender. While they brought in veteran Daniel Thomas, his role leans heavily on special teams, leaving Christopher Edmonds and Donovan McMillon as the only other options, which doesn’t inspire much confidence.

Brisker's tenure with the Chicago Bears saw him play in the shadow of the formidable Kevin Byard III. Despite this, he made a name for himself with his disruptive play in the box, almost like an additional linebacker.

His stats speak volumes: 21 run stops and a solid 73.7 run defense grade over 436 snaps. However, his coverage skills need refinement, as evidenced by allowing 31 catches and an opposing passer rating of 118.1.

The Browns are banking on retaining Hickman, but they’re also eyeing the draft, with prospects like Caleb Downs potentially solving their depth issues. Yet, relying solely on the draft is risky. Adding a proven veteran like Brisker would have been a strategic move, providing immediate depth and experience.

As the offseason progresses, the Browns have time to fortify their secondary. The goal will be to ensure that by the time training camp rolls around, they’ve added at least another starting-caliber cornerback and safety to the mix. This proactive approach will be crucial in maintaining their competitive edge in the division.
