When we talk about stalwarts in the NFL, Joel Bitonio's name rings out loud and clear. For 11 years, he’s been a cornerstone for the Cleveland Browns, a 6-foot-4 powerhouse drafted out of Nevada. But as with all good things, his time in Cleveland seems to be winding down.
Bitonio had given fans a glimmer of hope by agreeing to delay his contract void date, allowing him more time to decide on his future. The Browns’ organization, from new head coach Todd Monken to legend Joe Thomas, has been eager to see him stay.
However, the Browns took a hefty $23.5 million dead cap hit when the new void date passed, and Bitonio remains silent. This leaves him technically a free agent, ready to sign with any team.
With the NFL Draft approaching, it wouldn’t be surprising to see teams lining up for Bitonio’s services. Steelers insider Christopher Carter suggests Pittsburgh might be interested, especially if they don’t land the guard they want in the draft. An offer like a one-year, $8 million deal could be on the table.
The Steelers, having lost veteran guard Isaac Seumalo, are in need of a solid replacement. Their current options are limited, with Spencer Anderson having played just 193 snaps at left guard last season.
If draft prospects Vega Ioane or Kadyn Proctor aren’t available when they pick at No. 21, Bitonio could be a prime target.
While it’s hard to imagine Bitonio in anything but a Browns jersey, the Steelers have the cap space-$27 million-to make a competitive offer. Matching his previous salary with incentives might just catch his attention.
Relations between Bitonio and the Browns’ front office could be strained, especially after they moved quickly to re-sign Teven Jenkins and add Elgton Jenkins and Zion Johnson. Such moves might have sparked a desire in Bitonio to prove himself elsewhere.
While everything remains speculative, the free agency period is full of surprises. Bitonio’s next move could shake up the league.
