The Cleveland Browns are once again navigating an offseason filled with uncertainty at the quarterback position. While Shedeur Sanders seems to be the frontrunner to retain the starting role for 2026, whispers of a potential return for Deshaun Watson or the addition of a seasoned veteran have been circulating.
With the entire offensive line heading into free agency and a roster lacking depth, the Browns aren't exactly poised to make a splashy move for a high-profile quarterback. Instead, they might need to stick with their current options unless a budget-friendly trade opportunity arises.
Enter Spencer Rattler, currently the backup for the New Orleans Saints. Rattler, who had a decent stint with the Saints in 2025, might be the perfect candidate to join the Browns' quarterback mix.
Although he eventually lost his starting job to rookie Tyler Shough, that decision was more about the investment in Shough than Rattler's performance. In Kellen Moore's system, Rattler threw for eight touchdowns against five interceptions, showcasing a level of play that outshined the Browns' current quarterback carousel.
With Shough now the presumed starter in New Orleans, Rattler could be available for a bargain, potentially costing just a late-round draft pick. The Browns would be wise to consider making an offer before another team in need of a quarterback swoops in.
Fans might express concern about not giving Sanders a full season to prove himself. While Sanders' performance has been inconsistent, he deserves a chance to show what he can do under Todd Monken's guidance. Bringing in Rattler wouldn't necessarily sideline Sanders; instead, it could spark healthy competition between the two young quarterbacks throughout training camp and the preseason.
Looking ahead, the Browns are likely to target a quarterback in the early rounds of the 2027 NFL Draft. However, exploring what Rattler can bring to the table in a season with tempered expectations might just be a worthwhile gamble.
