Browns Defense Can Rattle Steelers Again With AFC North Stakes Rising

Can the Browns' revamped defense continue their dominance and upset the Steelers' long-standing reign in this pivotal AFC North showdown?

The Browns already showed Pittsburgh exactly how uncomfortable this matchup can get.

When the teams meet again in Week 8, the obvious headline is first place in the AFC North. The less obvious one is that Cleveland may have the kind of defense that can finally flip a rivalry that has tilted toward the Steelers for years. Pittsburgh has won 22 straight regular-season games against Cleveland dating back to 2003, but the way the Browns handled Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers on Oct. 1 suggested that streak might not mean much in this rematch.

Cleveland’s defense is built to make life miserable for a passing game that wants clean answers. Under new defensive coordinator Mike Rutenberg, the Browns needed a couple of weeks to settle in, but they’ve become the most man-heavy team in football.

While defenses like Seattle and Minnesota lean heavily on zone and the disguise that comes with it, Cleveland has gone the other way. Its 54% zone rate ranks 32nd in the league, per Sharp Analysis, and the Browns have still put together the NFL’s No. 5 defense in overall success rate by creating pressure up front and smothering receivers everywhere else.

The first meeting was a showcase for that approach. Cleveland played man coverage on 73.3% of Rodgers’ dropbacks, which per Next Gen Stats was the highest rate by any team at that point in the season. Rodgers was sacked five times, completed 55% of his passes, and threw two interceptions.

The Steelers never looked comfortable. Rodgers, T.J.

Watt, and Cam Heyward all seemed visibly frustrated as Cleveland jumped out to a 21-7 lead and threatened to turn the Thursday night game into a runaway. Pittsburgh did claw back with two second-half takeaways and Rodgers drove the offense for a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns, but the Browns still had the last word.

Andre Szmyt’s 56-yard field goal with 10 seconds left delivered a 27-24 Cleveland win at Huntington Bank Field.

That formula is hard to ignore heading into the rematch. The Browns’ secondary is loaded with Denzel Ward and Tyson Campbell on the outside, plus Grant Delpit, Ronnie Hickman and Emmanuel McNeil-Warren at safety. Rodgers’ reluctance to scramble, combined with Pittsburgh’s lack of a true difference-maker at running back, gave Cleveland the freedom to stay in those man looks for most of the night.

Nothing in the first meeting suggests the Browns are about to change that plan.

Browns Just Got More Fuel To Finish What They Started Vs Steelers

The Browns head into Sunday with a chance to do something they have not done since 1998: sweep the Steelers. Cleveland already handled Pittsburgh in Week 4, and the formula looked familiar for this rivalry, with the Browns defense doing the heavy lifting and limiting the Steelers chances to build any real rhythm on offense.

Kurt Warner added another layer to the matchup this week by casting doubt on Pittsburghs postseason ceiling, pointing to the offenses lack of explosiveness. For Cleveland, that kind of outside skepticism only sharpens the focus on a game that carries both bragging rights and a chance to finish a season series the Browns have been chasing for a long time. Browns Bring Back A Familiar Look For Huge Steelers Showdown

The Browns are leaning into a look that has already delivered in Pittsburgh, unveiling orange helmets, white jerseys and orange pants for their upcoming showdown with the Steelers. It is a throwback combination with some real meaning behind it, since Cleveland has worn it in both of its wins at Acrisure Stadium, including the 2021 playoff victory and a 2003 regular-season result.

For a team trying to climb in the AFC North, the uniform choice adds a little extra edge to a game that already carries plenty of weight. Cleveland does not get many chances to change the feel of this rivalry on the road, so bringing back a familiar look for a huge divisional test is a subtle nod to history and a reminder of what is at stake. Browns Fans Suddenly Have A New Reason To Watch Myles Garrett

Myles Garretts move to injured reserve has created a new wrinkle for Browns fans who still keep one eye on the pass-rushers next chapter. The Rams are already juggling a long list of injuries, and with Garrett coming off surgery, there is no clear timetable for when he might be back on the field. For Cleveland followers, it is another reminder that the NFL calendar can turn quickly, especially when a familiar star is suddenly stuck on the sideline.

The uncertainty also adds intrigue to the Rams upcoming schedule, including a Week 8 game that now carries even more questions about availability. Beyond that, there is already a bigger-picture buzz around a possible Thanksgiving Eve matchup with Micah Parsons and the Green Bay Packers, a game that could become one of the seasons most compelling pass-rushing showdowns if both sides are at full strength. For now, though, the only sure thing is that Garretts status remains one of the more unpredictable storylines to watch. [Read more 🡒]
