On the Browns’ side, Cedric Tillman looks like a long shot to crack the 53-man roster. He’s been passed by Isaiah Bond, and Cleveland seems to be especially fond of Gage Larvadain, Tylan Wallace, and Luke Floriea. Even Malachi Corley may have a better standing with the team at this point.
Jerry Jeudy, though, is the more interesting name. The Texans have already lost Jayden Higgins for the season, and Tank Dell is still working back from a major injury, so Houston could use another pass catcher in a hurry. Jeudy, a former first-round pick still in his prime, would bring more trade value than an injured depth receiver.
The Browns’ real need is on the back end. Denzel Ward and Tyson Campbell give them a strong starting duo, but there isn’t much behind them.
Undrafted free agent Michael Coats Jr. has been a pleasant surprise and is in the mix for CB3. Tre Avery has also made some plays, including a couple of picks off Deshaun Watson in training camp, but the room drops off fast after that.
If Cleveland wanted to push for a corner in return, 2025 draft pick Jaylin Smith would be the ideal target. Even if he’s unavailable, a Texans third-string corner would still likely outpace most of the players fighting for a spot in Cleveland.
There’s also a natural fit on the coaching side. Houston plays the most physical defense in the game, and anyone coming from DeMeco Ryans’ team should adapt well in Mike Rutenberg’s system. Ryans and Rutenberg also worked together in San Francisco in 2020, which raises the chance that the schemes are already familiar.
With Derek Stingley Jr. rarely leaving the field, the Texans may be willing to part with a promising defensive piece if it helps them land the pass catcher they need. That’s what makes this such a clean possibility: a rare trade where both sides could solve a real problem without surrendering any picks.
