The Browns’ quarterback battle may be the headline, but the real concern in Cleveland camp is the offensive line.
More than a week into training camp, the Shedeur Sanders-Deshaun Watson competition is still drifting without a clear answer. Zac Jackson of The Athletic said after Todd Monken’s final offensive install on Aug. 6 that fans should not expect a Week 1 decision for another “two weeks and two days.”
Still, the bigger issue is what’s happening in front of those quarterbacks. General manager Andrew Berry drew praise for reshaping the offensive line this offseason, but the early returns have been uneven, with injuries and constant shuffling making it tough to get any real rhythm in full-pad 11-on-11 work.
“The Browns are decimated at defensive tackle right now,” ESPN’s Daniel Oyefusi said this week on Jackson’s podcast. “Adin Hutchinson and Elijah Chatman were taking the No. 1 reps at defensive tackle - and the offensive line still didn’t stand a chance.
So that was kind of a little disheartening, even for an offensive line that’s just getting to know each other and figuring things out. But again, offensive lines usually do take some time, even well into a season, to really figure things out so you kind of want to keep some perspective with that.”
The main problem seems to be continuity, or the lack of it. Monken has rotated Watson and Sanders between the first and second units since camp opened, but those quarterbacks have rarely been paired with the same blocking combinations. Tytus Howard at right tackle and Zion Johnson at left guard have been the steadiest pieces, while nearly everything else has been in flux.
Spencer Fano, who arrived as the No. 9 overall draft pick and spent enough of the spring with the first team at left tackle to look like a safe Week 1 bet, has been splitting that spot with Dawand Jones. Jones has recently drawn praise from both Monken and offensive line coach George Warhop.
Right guard has also turned into a moving target. Teven Jenkins opened camp as the favorite there, but he has missed half the team’s practices with an undisclosed injury. In his place, KT Leveston, who was expected to compete for depth at tackle after arriving as a former seventh-round pick, has been working with the first-team offense at guard.
Center has been just as unsettled. Fifth-round rookie Parker Brailsford had been seen as a possible challenger for the job, but Jackson reported he was wearing a brace on his wrist and missed back-to-back practices this week. Elgton Jenkins, the veteran starter at center, has also missed time, which has left Luke Wypler working exclusively with the top group.
That leaves Cleveland with an offensive line that still looks unfinished as the preseason opener against the Chicago Bears on Aug. 15 approaches. And the timing matters, because the Browns are trying to sort it out while Mason Graham, Maliek Collins, and most of the defensive tackle group have been sitting out practice this week.
Jackson also noted Friday that undrafted rookie edge rusher Tyreak Sapp has been lining up with the defensive tackles because of the injuries. On paper, that should be a matchup the Browns’ offense controls.
A projected starting five of Fano, Johnson, Elgton Jenkins, Teven Jenkins, and Howard looked promising on paper this offseason. On the field, though, the group has been inconsistent, and if it takes until the first month of the regular season to finally click, as Oyefusi suggested, Monken’s new era could begin on shaky ground.

Browns Camp Injuries Just Changed The Outlook For A Young Receiver
Training camp injuries have already started to reshape the Browns roster picture, and one of the more notable moves involved young wide receiver Jamari Thrash. Cleveland waived Thrash with an injury designation after he went down with a knee injury in camp, a transaction that signals the team is making room while also managing the roster around a wave of training-camp absences.
The Browns also waived linebacker Reid Carrico, re-signed offensive lineman Jack Conley and brought in undrafted rookie cornerback Jeadyn Lukus as part of the effort to keep the group afloat. For Thrash, the path is especially unfortunate because he is not in position to help this season, and if he clears waivers he will revert to the injured reserve list as Cleveland keeps adjusting to the bodies missing from practice. Browns Quarterback Battle May Already Have A Frustrating Ending
The Browns are still working through training camp and fine-tuning their offense, but the quarterback picture may already be tilting in one direction. Deshaun Watson is recovering from an Achilles injury, and he still has to show he can handle practice and preseason reps, yet the conversation around the job has not exactly sounded like an open competition.
NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo has consistently believed Watson will be the starter, a view he says he has held since the NFL Scouting Combine in February. For Cleveland, that leaves the rest of the summer with a familiar tension: the team can keep evaluating and preparing, but the most important decision under center may already be settling into place. Browns QB Battle Keeps Raising A Camp Concern Fans Cant Ignore
Rain pushed the Browns inside for their ninth day of training camp on Aug. 7, and the change of scenery did little to quiet the little warning signs showing up on offense. With the practice closed to fans, the focus shifted to the details, and the Browns finished their offensive installation period while several players sat out. Even without the full eyes of the public on them, the early camp work still drew attention for the same reasons it has at other sessions: the operation has not always looked clean.
The most notable bright spots came from the undrafted receiver group, with Luke Floriea and Gage Larvadain continuing to pop in the kind of ways that can matter once the roster starts tightening. On the defensive side, cornerback Donovan McMillon added an interception to the days notes, but the bigger concern remains how the quarterbacks handle the basics of the offense as camp moves forward. Those issues are hard to ignore in August, especially when every practice rep is starting to matter a little more. [Read more 🡒]
