Browns Backfield Suddenly Has A Ravens Problem They Cant Ignore

Monken offers cautious optimism for the Browns' beleaguered backfield as they prepare for a crucial showdown with the Ravens.

The Browns got a small dose of optimism on the injury front Monday, even if the bigger picture in Cleveland still looks messy.

After a 17-12 loss to the New York Jets dropped the Browns to 3-2 and snapped their three-game winning streak, the focus quickly shifted to the backfield. Starting running back Quinshon Judkins came out of Sunday’s game in a walking boot, and head coach Todd Monken later explained why.

Monken said Judkins “had a little tweak” in his ankle and called him “day-to-day.”

That matters because Cleveland is already trying to navigate life without Dylan Sampson, who has been sidelined since suffering an injury in the season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Now the Browns are dealing with uncertainty around both of the backs they had counted on most.

Monken also said on Monday, Oct. 12, that he would not rule out any of the team’s injured players for the Week 6 matchup with the Baltimore Ravens, including Judkins. He added that there is a “possibility” the Browns open Sampson’s practice window this week, though his return remains unsettled as he works back from a knee injury.

Browns coach Todd Monken said there is a “possibility” the team opens RB Dylan Sampson’s practice window this week. He’s missed the last 4 games with a knee injury.

If Cleveland is forced to go into Sunday short-handed again, the depth chart gets thin fast. Raheim Sanders and Jaleel McLaughlin are the backs available right now, but neither has clearly seized the job.

The numbers tell the story. Through five games, the Browns have 471 rushing yards on 126 carries and only two rushing touchdowns. That’s less than 100 yards per game on the ground, and it leaves the offense with a lot to clean up.

Judkins has averaged 3.0 yards per carry, while Sanders and McLaughlin have combined for just 11 rushing attempts to open the season. With a brand-new offensive line and a unit still trying to find its footing with Deshaun Watson at quarterback, Cleveland hasn’t found much rhythm in the run game.

That could push the front office to consider another addition if Judkins and Sampson are both unavailable by the weekend.

For now, though, the Browns are waiting on updates. Monken said he’ll continue to monitor both players as the week goes on.

The Browns and Ravens meet Sunday, Oct. 18, at 1:00 p.m. EST at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland.

Browns Trade Debate Is Heating Up As Travis Hunter Breaks Out

The Browns decision to move out of the No. 2 spot in the 2025 NFL Draft has come back into focus as Travis Hunter keeps flashing in Jacksonville. Cleveland turned that pick into a haul that brought in Mason Graham and other additions, and those players have already helped on a roster that needed immediate help. At the time, it looked like a move built around volume and flexibility, the kind of trade that could be judged more by the cumulative returns than any single name.

Hunter, though, is making the conversation harder to avoid. In Jacksonville, he has played at an All-Pro level at cornerback and has been a major reason the Jaguars have gotten off to a strong start, which naturally has reignited the debate over what Cleveland gave up. The Browns still have pieces from the deal contributing to the present, but Hunters breakout has added a fresh layer to a trade that was always going to be measured over time. [Read more 🡒]

Browns Offense Has Two Problems Cleveland Cant Ignore Much Longer

Clevelands offense has been fighting two separate battles this season, and neither has let up. The running back room has been thinned by injuries to Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Sampson, while the offensive line has struggled to play with the kind of cohesion that keeps a game script on schedule and the quarterback clean.

Those issues have left the Browns with a limited margin for error and a high sack rate that keeps showing up in the wrong moments. With the offense still searching for answers, theres also been chatter about whether a trade could help address the lack of balance, with Jerry Jeudy and Tony Pollard names floating into the conversation as possible ways to change the equation. Browns Suddenly Have A Linebacker Concern They Cant Ignore

Carson Schwesinger left the Browns game against the Jets with a Grade 1 ankle sprain, but he still managed to stay on the field for every defensive snap. It was a notable finish for a rookie linebacker who has quickly become part of the fabric of Clevelands defense, and it immediately turned the focus from the injury itself to how he would handle the next few days.

His status for Week 6 now hinges on how he responds in practice, with the Ravens looming next on the schedule. The concern is bigger than one players availability, because Cleveland does not have much depth at inside linebacker, which makes Schwesingers health a key piece of the defensive puzzle heading into a tough matchup.
