Shedeur Sanders got an earful from the Buffalo Bills on Thursday, but he answered the noise with a big throw.
During the Browns-Bills joint practice in Berea, Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson made his presence felt even though he was not practicing.
Tom Withers reported that Gardner-Johnson yelled “Check-down King” in Sanders’ direction from the sideline. The taunting did not stop there.
Another Bills defender called the Browns offense “checkdown city,” and one voice could be heard saying, “This s*** checkdown city!”
The comments came as Sanders continued his battle with Deshaun Watson for the Browns’ starting job. He split first-team reps with Watson throughout the session and stayed active against a Bills defense that brought plenty of pressure and plenty of chatter. Gardner-Johnson has built a reputation for getting under opponents’ skin, and he kept working from the sideline even without taking part in practice.
Sanders did not let the talk derail him. He hit Malachi Corley for a 50-yard touchdown that stood out as one of the day’s biggest plays. The deep strike showed the kind of downfield pop critics have questioned at times, and it gave Sanders a clean response to the Bills’ jabs.
By the updated practice tracker, Sanders finished 15 of 23 across team drills. He avoided turnovers and connected on a mix of intermediate and longer throws. Watson went 12 of 17 with a touchdown and an interception in his snaps.
The session also served as a preview of Saturday’s preseason game against Buffalo, when Sanders is slated to start. For now, he leaves the joint practice with a strong throw on the board and a fresh dose of motivation after taking the Bills’ trash talk head-on.
