Will Heldts Clemson Rise Looks Like More Than A Hot Streak

Deck: Tom Allen shares insights on Will Heldt's impressive season, crediting hard work and consistent habits for the defensive end's standout performance.

Clemson’s 20-16 loss to Virginia Tech on Saturday didn’t offer a lot to celebrate, but Will Heldt kept giving the Tigers something to lean on.

The 6-foot-6 senior was active from start to finish, stacking up four tackles, including two for loss, along with two sacks and a pass deflection. He did it while logging a season-high 50 snaps, and his six sacks on the year now rank tied for 13th in the nation.

That kind of output didn’t catch defensive coordinator Tom Allen off guard. When Allen met with reporters Tuesday, he made it clear Heldt’s rise has been building for a while.

“I thought he played his best game this past week since I’ve been coaching him. I’m not really surprised by [his improvement], though,” he said.

“His daily approach is, man, it’s awesome. He’s just so consistent, and so I think that’s allowed him to continue to get better.”

Allen’s confidence in Heldt comes from years of watching him develop. During Allen’s six seasons as Indiana’s head coach, he recruited Heldt and offered him in May 2022. Heldt ultimately went a different direction in the Big Ten, but Allen kept tracking him, following his final season with the Hoosiers and later his work as Penn State’s defensive coordinator.

“He’s one of those unique guys that I’ve had a long-term opportunity to evaluate and watch: when he was in high school, when he went and played at Purdue for a couple of seasons, and then coming here,” he continued. “He’s just improved every single year since I’ve known him and evaluated him, which is, you know, what a testament to his work ethic; his passion.”

Allen also pointed to the work Heldt puts in away from the spotlight. He described a player who is constantly around the building, adding to his game in every way he can.

“He’s in here all the time working, doing stuff extra, whether it’s with his body, with his mind, watching film, preparing, and I think just playing with a higher level of confidence, you know, and understanding the system and what we have around him.”

For Allen, the improvement shows up in the most obvious place of all: the physical side. He said Heldt keeps adding to his frame and that growth is showing in the way he wins at the line.

“And I just think that, physically, he just gets a little bit bigger, faster and stronger every year,” he finished. “That allows him to make the plays he’s making, you know, and just being able to play with a violent intent, and be able to create the separation he needs, and to get the sacks that he’s gotten and the disruptive plays, and just see him flying around.”

Heldt and Clemson are back on Saturday night against Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and the game will air on ACC Network.

Dabo Swinney Just Put A Clemson Starter On Notice

Clemsons offense has been searching for more consistency, and Dabo Swinney made it clear this week that the conversation starts with accountability. Sophomore running back Gideon Davidson has still led the Tigers in rushing yards and touchdowns, but Swinney pointed to missed assignments and costly decisions as part of what has slowed the unit down, especially in the recent loss to Virginia Tech.

The concerns are bigger than just ball production, too. Davidson has seen his playing time affected after two sacks allowed and a couple of poor reads on key snaps, and with competition building in the backfield, his hold on the starting job is suddenly something to watch. Swinney still believes Davidson is committed and has the ability to bounce back, but the message was clear: the margin for error is getting smaller. [Read more 🡒]

Clemson's QB Decision Looks Different After Dabo's Latest Explanation

Clemsons quarterback plan took a turn because of circumstances as much as performance, with Dabo Swinney explaining that Christopher Vizzinas arm injury changed the shape of the competition. Vizzina was limited in practice and wasnt fully available for games, which forced the staff to adjust its evaluation and lean into a different option when it came time to settle on a starter.

Swinney said Vizzina is now closer to full health, but Tait Reynolds remains the guy for the moment as Clemson moves forward. The door is not shut on the battle entirely, either, since the coaching staff could keep revisiting the position if the offense continues to sputter. [Read more 🡒]

Clemson Commit Jamarin Simmons Just Reached Another Big Recruiting Milestone

Jamarin Simmons is set for another notable stop on the recruiting trail, with the Navy All-American Bowl Road to the Dome tour scheduled to come through Amos P. Godby High School in Tallahassee on Oct. 30, 2026. The Clemson commit will be honored as a 2027 Navy All-American during a school-wide pep rally, adding another layer to what has already become a major senior-year recognition for one of the Tigers prized pledges.

Simmons is slated to take part in the annual East vs. West matchup at the Alamodome in San Antonio on Jan. 9, 2027, joining a group of 100 All-Americans being celebrated through live and virtual jersey presentations. For Clemson, it is another reminder of the caliber of talent still coming into the program, and another chance for the fan base to track a commitment whose profile keeps rising on a national stage.
