Tait Reynolds Is Running Out Of Time To Prove Hes Clemsons Answer

As Tait Reynolds faces Florida State, he must elevate his performance to secure his future as Clemson's starting quarterback.

Tait Reynolds has run out of runway at Clemson.

By the time the Tigers head to Florida State on Saturday night, Reynolds will be making his sixth career start, and the numbers around him no longer scream “freshman learning curve.” Clemson is 3-2 in his starts this season, with wins over North Carolina, Cal, and Charleston Southern, plus conference losses to Miami and Virginia Tech. He’s also nearing 500 career snaps at quarterback, which is a pretty clear sign that the time for patience has started to fade.

Reynolds is right around 400 snaps through the first seven games of the season, and the production has leveled off. He’s completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 1,096 yards, with one touchdown and three interceptions.

On the ground, he has 80 carries for 164 yards and one rushing score. The early leeway he received is gone now.

The truth is, the quarterback’s development has to show up in real games, not just in promise. The staff can keep treating him like a work in progress, but at some point the position demands more than understanding. It demands results.

There’s still a path for Reynolds to turn the season and his standing around, but it has to happen in the final five games. The priorities are clear: he has to be better on critical downs, more confident throwing on the move, and willing to ad-lib when the situation calls for it. Third down and red zone execution will go a long way toward determining whether he enters next season as the guy.

One of the most encouraging parts of his game has been the way he can uncork the ball outside the numbers while scrambling. Some of Clemson’s best flashes from Reynolds have come when the pocket breaks down and he’s forced to improvise. It’s a trait worth building on, but it needs to show up more often.

That improvisational side may actually be where he looks most comfortable. Last weekend’s failed drive against Virginia Tech showed that.

Clemson pushed tempo in its two-minute offense, and for a stretch Reynolds looked sharp. Then came a fourth-and-9, and he tried to run play-action in a spot that was clearly made for a pass.

With three losses already on the board, Clemson has little left to protect at this point. Reynolds may be the starter moving forward, but the rest of November has to be about proving it. He has to earn the job now.

Clemson Opens With One Big Question Hanging Over Its March Hopes

Clemson begins its new season with the kind of expectations that only come after a deep March run, and the Tigers are trying to turn last years Elite Eight appearance into a launch point rather than a peak. There is still plenty to like about the roster, with several contributors back and a batch of new transfers expected to help fill in the edges, but the first test comes with a notable wrinkle against Stetson.

Carter Wellings knee injury hangs over the opener and leaves Clemson without one of its key players as the calendar flips to another season. Stetson, meanwhile, arrives with its own intrigue under Donnie Jones and preseason Atlantic Sun Player of the Year Collin Kuhl, giving the Tigers a nonconference matchup that should at least demand attention from the jump while Clemson waits to see how long it will have to manage without Welling. Clemson Faces A Brutal ACC Test With Its Offense Under Pressure

Clemson heads into Saturdays ACC road game at Florida State with its offense carrying plenty of pressure and little margin for error. The matchup at Doak Campbell Stadium has the feel of a measuring stick game, and the Tigers are listed as a six-point underdog as they try to steady themselves against a conference opponent that has a habit of turning home games into a problem for visitors.

The injury updates on both sides only add another layer to a game that already looks like a grind. Clemson needs a cleaner offensive showing to avoid falling further behind in the league race, but the outlook around this one points to a difficult night and the possibility that the Tigers ACC losing streak reaches three games when its over. Gideon Davidson Has A Big Chance To Answer Clemson's Toughest Week

Gideon Davidson has already found himself at the center of a sharper-than-usual Clemson storyline this week, after Dabo Swinney publicly called out the freshman running back for a lack of discipline following an early exit from a recent game. The attention did not stop there, either, with Davidsons father weighing in on social media about the limited carries his son received in that same game. For a player who has been one of Clemsons more important offensive pieces this season, it has turned into an unusually public test of composure as much as production.

Now the timing gets even more interesting, because Clemson may need Davidson right back in a major role when it meets Florida State. The Tigers have leaned on him for meaningful offense all season, and this is the kind of week when one back can change the tone of the entire game plan. Whether Davidson turns the conversation back toward football will be one of the more closely watched parts of Clemsons preparation. [Read more 🡒]
