Clemson linebacker Sammy Brown is already showing up on preseason radar before the 2026 college football season even gets rolling.
Pro Football Focus’ Max Chadwick slotted Brown at No. 8 in his ranking of the top 10 returning linebackers, putting the Tigers’ junior among a group led by Texas Tech’s Ben Roberts, Notre Dame’s Drayk Bowen, Missouri’s Nicholas Rodriguez, Georgia’s Chris Cole, Texas Tech’s Austin Romaine, Texas’ Rasheem Biles and Notre Dame’s Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa.
That kind of placement fits what Brown has done in just two seasons in Death Valley. The 6-foot-2, 235-pound hybrid backer arrived in 2024 as one of the nation’s top recruits and wasted no time making an impact. As a true freshman, he piled up 80 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, five sacks and three pass deflections, a breakout that earned him ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Last season, with Wade Woodaz alongside him in the middle of the defense, Brown took another step. He became a full-time starter and turned in one of the best seasons on Clemson’s defense, finishing with 106 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, five pass deflections, one forced fumble and one interception.
When the year ended, Brown was tied for second in the conference in tackles and tied for eighth in tackles for loss. That production landed him First Team All-Conference honors and added to the growing national buzz around his game.
Now the spotlight shifts even more firmly onto Brown in 2026. Clemson’s linebacker room is one of the more uncertain spots on the roster after the Luke Ferrelli saga during the transfer portal cycle, and Woodaz is gone as well. That leaves Brown with a much bigger load to carry.
Chadwick clearly sees more than just production. He noted that Brown is being projected as a top-40 pick in the 2027 NFL Draft and pointed to the traits that make him stand out.
"Brown is currently projected as a top-40 pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, and it's easy to see why," Chadwick wrote. "At 6-foot-2 and 235 pounds, he is an elite athlete who reached a top speed of nearly 22 mph, according to player-tracking data. That speed helped him break up five passes in 2025, tied for the most among linebackers in the nation."
"While Brown moves at a blur, he also plays under control. His 6.1% missed tackle rate in 2025 ranked in the 91st percentile among linebackers."
Brown’s preseason stock has already drawn more attention beyond PFF, too. He earned a First-team Preseason All-American nod from the Walter Camp Football Foundation last month.
For now, Clemson’s projected starter next to him appears to be fifth-year Kobe McCloud, who has logged 346 defensive snaps and three starts over the last four years. But that job is still up for grabs, with fall camp set to begin August 6 and Jeremiah Alexander still in the mix for the starting role.
