Sammy Brown Is Giving Clemson Fans A New Reason To Dream

Sammy Brown joins an exclusive group as he is named to the Walter Camp Award watch list, spotlighting college football's best talent nationwide.

Clemson linebacker Sammy Brown is on the radar for one of college football’s biggest individual honors.

The Walter Camp Football Foundation announced Brown as one of 50 players on the preseason watch list for the 2026 Walter Camp Player of the Year award. The honor is the nation’s fourth-oldest individual college football accolade, and the foundation’s latest list leans heavily toward offense, with 41 offensive players and nine defensive players included.

The watch list spans 38 schools across 11 conferences, including independents. Texas leads the way with four selections, Miami has three, and seven schools - Georgia, Indiana, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Texas A&M - each placed two players on the list.

“We are proud to continue the great work of Walter Camp, considered the father of American football, and recognize the very best college football players in the nation,” Foundation president Michael Madera said. “This watch list is a great start to what is shaping up to be another exciting year of college football.”

Brown is one of nine defensive players named to the preseason group. The full list also includes names such as Texas quarterback Arch Manning, Ohio State wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers, Oregon quarterback Dante Moore and Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton.

The preseason watch list will be trimmed to 10 semifinalists in early November, with three finalists to follow in early December. The winner, chosen by the 138 NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors, will be announced in the second week of December.

Earlier this summer, the foundation released its 2026 preseason All-American teams. Walter Camp is the nation’s oldest and most prestigious collegiate football All-America team.

The award’s history stretches back to 1967, when it was first handed out. Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza was the 59th winner in 2025 and the 24th quarterback to claim it. The list of past winners also includes 25 running backs, five wide receivers, one wide receiver/defensive back, one tight end and three defensive players.

Colorado’s Travis Hunter became the first two-way player to win the award in 2024. Three players have won it more than once: USC’s OJ.

Simpson, Ohio State’s Archie Griffin and Texas’ Colt McCoy. Three defensive players have taken home the honor: Pittsburgh’s Hugh Green, Michigan’s Charles Woodson and Notre Dame’s Manti Teo.

Players from 26 different schools have earned the award, with USC leading all programs with seven wins. Oklahoma, Ohio State and Notre Dame are next with four each.

Appearing on the preseason watch list is not required to win the Walter Camp award or be named to the All-America team.

Clemson Suddenly Has A Real Question At Wide Receiver

Clemsons receiver room picked up an unexpected layer of uncertainty in the middle of fall camp when Cole Turner stopped practicing and stepped away from the program to attend to personal matters, according to team sources. Turner is still listed on the official roster, but his absence has already become part of the conversation as the Tigers sort out their depth and roles at wide receiver heading into the season.

For a position group that can shift quickly in August, losing a player who had been around the program since camp opened changes the feel of the room even if the door remains open for a later return. Clemson is treating the situation with patience for now, and there is still a chance Turner could come back before the season ends, but for the moment the Tigers are left planning without knowing when, or if, hell be back on the field. Clemson Still Has One Huge Offensive Line Question Before LSU

Less than three weeks before Clemson opens against LSU, the offensive line is still a work in progress after four starters moved on from last season. Senior center Harris Sewell and fifth-year guard Collin Sadler have emerged as the most settled pieces, giving the Tigers at least a foundation in the middle, but the rest of the unit is still being sorted out as camp continues.

The staff has kept moving players around at tackle and guard while looking for the right mix, which makes this one of the more important lingering questions on the roster. Clemson is also encouraged by senior running back Jarvis Green, who has shown promise in preseason scrimmages after coming back from a knee injury, and Dabo Swinney has pointed to the value of working through the summer heat as another part of the preparation. Clemsons Opener Just Became A Test Of Dabos Whole Message

Clemsons season opener against LSU has already carried the usual weight of a marquee matchup, but it has taken on a little extra edge after Dabo Swinneys recent bunch of nobodies remark drew heat from Paul Finebaum. Finebaums critique did not stop at the quote itself, either, as he framed it as part of a bigger question about where Clemson stands after last years disappointing 7-6 finish and whether the program can get back to its standard quickly enough to quiet the noise.

The stakes around this one are bigger than just a Week 1 result because it also lands right in the middle of the broader conversation about Swinneys future. Finebaum suggested another mediocre season could force Clemsons administration to at least think about moving on, even with the massive buyout that comes with such a decision. For now, the Tigers get LSU and a national stage, which is exactly the kind of setting that can either reinforce Swinneys message or make the criticism around it even louder. [Read more 🡒]
