Travis Etienne: A High-Stakes Gamble for the Saints
Travis Etienne Jr. is heading to New Orleans, and while Saints fans are buzzing with excitement, some analysts are sounding a note of caution. Etienne just inked a four-year, $47 million deal, placing him among the top ten highest-paid running backs in the league. Yet, Pro Football Focus (PFF) is raising eyebrows, labeling this move a potential "boom-or-bust" scenario.
The Big Easy Bet
Etienne's journey to New Orleans follows a five-year stint in Jacksonville, and the Saints have chosen him over Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love in the draft. It's not hard to see why: Etienne is coming off a stellar season with 1,399 yards from scrimmage and 13 touchdowns, both career highs. Saints head coach Kellen Moore is enthusiastic, highlighting Etienne’s "home run" speed that Clemson fans have long admired.
PFF’s Concerns: A Closer Look
Despite Etienne's impressive stats, PFF isn't entirely sold. Over the past two seasons, they ranked his rushing grade 58th out of 72 qualified backs. Their concerns center on two main issues:
- Offensive Line Woes: The Saints' offensive line ranked second-to-last in run-blocking last year.
If Etienne struggled to find space in Jacksonville, New Orleans might not offer much relief.
- Declining Tackles: Etienne hasn’t been breaking tackles as effectively as he did earlier in his career.
PFF suggests the Saints may have overpaid for a player who, while good, might not be elite.
The Upside: Why the Saints Could Be Right
Etienne's potential goes beyond just the numbers. He finished 11th in the league in rushing yards and 17th in yards from scrimmage last year. Even after recovering from a serious foot injury, he forced 46 missed tackles and recorded 28 explosive runs in 2025.
Kellen Moore’s offensive strategy is designed to leverage running backs in the passing game. Etienne caught 36 passes for six touchdowns last season, and if Moore can create opportunities for him in open space, the narrative of Etienne being a risky signing could quickly change.
In the end, while PFF’s caution is worth noting, the Saints are banking on Etienne’s ability to deliver explosive plays and elevate their offense to new heights. If he lives up to the hype, this could be a game-changing move for New Orleans.
