In the midst of Ole Miss's recent financial turbulence, defensive coordinator Pete Golding finds himself under scrutiny once again. This time, it's Clemson's head coach, Dabo Swinney, raising concerns over linebacker Luke Ferrelli's unexpected switch from Clemson to Ole Miss. Swinney suspects that Ole Miss may have engaged in some off-the-record conversations with Ferrelli, potentially influencing his decision to leave Clemson.
Golding, addressing the issue during spring practice, emphasized the role of compliance offices in investigating potential violations. The conversation around possible repercussions for Golding is heating up.
On “The Audible” podcast, analyst Stuart Vandel discussed the situation with Bruce Feldman, suggesting that if Swinney's claims hold true, Golding might face a suspension. Vandel noted, “I think based on precedent, if it is exactly as Dabo described it, Golding will get a suspension.
I don’t know how long… probably multiple games. Tampering is not considered a major violation in the NCAA rule book, but there have been coaches who got suspended for it.”
The NCAA has stepped in to investigate these allegations, highlighting ongoing challenges with the transfer portal and recruitment processes. Swinney's claims suggest Ole Miss reached out to Ferrelli while he was still enrolled at Clemson, prompting Clemson to notify the NCAA of potential tampering.
Golding addressed these accusations, stating, “There’s two sides to every story. I’m not going to sit up here and use the podium as a grandstand… That’s why there is enforcement.
That’s why we have our compliance office.” He mentioned that Ole Miss had shown interest in Ferrelli earlier, including a visit before the Fiesta Bowl.
While the NCAA reviews the allegations, Ole Miss remains focused on building its program under Golding's leadership, despite the external challenges they face.
