Trevor Lawrence took a major step forward in 2025 - and the Jacksonville Jaguars are just getting started.
After a strong finish to the regular season, head coach Liam Coen is already looking ahead to what’s next for his quarterback. And according to Coen, the next phase isn’t about scaling back. It’s about unlocking even more.
“You throw the whole playbook at somebody in the offseason and training camp,” Coen said. “Then once you're in-season, some things are game plan specific, and some things are things we need to get done and need to rep. Well, it’s going to be about unloading the rest of the playbook on him.”
Translation: Lawrence handled everything thrown at him in Year 1 of Coen’s system - and now it’s time to take the training wheels off.
A Second-Half Surge That Turned Heads
Let’s rewind for a second. The Jaguars didn’t just finish the 2025 season strong - they caught fire. Jacksonville rattled off eight straight wins to close out the regular season, and the offense was humming, averaging nearly 33 points per game over that stretch.
At the center of it all was Lawrence, who looked every bit the franchise quarterback the Jaguars envisioned when they drafted him No. 1 overall. He ranked fourth among all quarterbacks in total passing yards during that eight-game run, per PFF. But it wasn’t just about volume - it was about efficiency and control.
Lawrence was third in yards per attempt, second in passing touchdowns, and had the fifth-lowest turnover-worthy play rate in that span. That’s a rare combination of aggression and ball security. And it wasn’t just what he did with his arm - Lawrence made plenty of plays with his legs, too, extending drives and keeping defenses honest.
Mastering the Mental Game
What really stood out, though, was how comfortable Lawrence looked before the snap. The production we saw post-snap - the big throws, the explosive plays, the rhythm - all started with what he was doing at the line of scrimmage. Lawrence was diagnosing defenses, making adjustments, and putting the offense in the right position to succeed.
That kind of command doesn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of hours in the film room, reps on the practice field, and trust between quarterback and play-caller. And according to Coen, that trust is only going to grow.
“What layers can we continue to add to the offense?” Coen said. “I’m excited to do that with Trevor.”
Year 2: Time to Level Up
There’s a reason why Year 2 in a system is often when things really click for quarterbacks. The first year is about learning terminology, understanding concepts, and building chemistry.
The second year? That’s when you get to play fast.
With the foundation now in place, Coen and Lawrence can dive deeper into the playbook. Think expanded route trees, more complex pre-snap motion, and a wider range of situational calls. In other words, the offense that averaged 33 points per game down the stretch might just be scratching the surface.
Lawrence already showed he can thrive in Coen’s system. Now, with a full offseason to refine and expand it, the Jaguars are poised to take another step forward - and so is their quarterback.
If the second half of 2025 was any indication, the rest of the AFC better be paying attention. Trevor Lawrence is only getting started.
