Jerome Carter III Gave Clemson Fans A Postgame Story Theyll Love

Jerome Carter III shines against Florida State, marking a historic game that honors his father's legacy with an impressive sack and interception performance.

Clemson left Doak Campbell Stadium with a defense that kept punching all night, and Jerome Carter III had a hand in two of the biggest blows.

The safety came away with a sack and an interception in the Tigers’ win over Florida State, helping Clemson pile up four takeaways in the road victory. For Carter, the performance carried an extra layer: his father, Jerome Jr., played defensive back for the Seminoles from 2001-04 before moving on to the NFL with the St. Louis Rams.

Saturday’s game gave Carter a rare chance to line up against the school his father once called home, and he matched both of his father’s game totals for sacks and interceptions in the process. It also marked his first takeaway as a Tiger.

“For Jerome to come in here tonight and have a sack and an interception, pretty cool for that young man,” head coach Dabo Swinney said.

Carter, an Old Dominion transfer, arrived at Clemson with a reputation for making plays on the ball. He led the Monarchs with a school-record six interceptions last season before entering the transfer portal following the 2025 season. Florida State was also in the mix for him, which only added to the meaning of the night.

Even with the on-field success, Carter said the personal side of the moment could hit hard the next time he sees his father.

“When I go to hug him, I might cry, because it was a dream for me to come to this school,” he said. ‘I was a legacy kid, so I wanted to come and play here, but I never really got the chance. It was all in God’s plan.”

Carter’s sack came on the first drive, part of Clemson’s plan to keep Ashton Daniels from taking over with his legs. Daniels has a double-digit amount of rushing touchdowns this season, and the Tigers made sure to keep that threat in front of them.

“We really harped on it this week,” Carter said. “When things break down, he’ll end up running, or he’s got the ability to run. So, that was just what we were coached up on.”

Later, Carter jumped a deep throw intended for Florida State wide receiver Duce Robinson and secured the interception. Afterward, he said it meant a lot to finally get his first pick in a Clemson uniform.

‘I’ve been waiting to get one the whole season,” he said. “So, I’ve seen the opportunity to go get one, and I went and got it for the team.”

Clemsons Florida State Win Suddenly Looks Bigger Than Fans Realized

Clemsons win at Florida State now carries a different kind of weight after the Seminoles moved on from head coach Mike Norvell and defensive coordinator Tony White following a 2-10 season. What looked at the time like another solid conference result for the Tigers has turned into part of the backdrop for a major reset in Tallahassee, one that was set in motion after the home loss to Clemson and a year of mounting frustration.

Rick Stockstill, a former Florida State quarterback and the programs director of scouting, has been named interim head coach as the Seminoles begin sorting through what comes next. For Clemson, the timing only adds to the significance of that road win, since it now sits as one of the clearest markers in a season that helped push Florida State toward change. [Read more 🡒]

Dabo Swinney Turned Clemsons FSU Win Into A Bigger Statement

Dabo Swinneys postgame message after Clemsons win at Florida State went beyond the usual coach-speak and into a broader defense of the profession itself. After seeing a banner fly over the stadium calling for Mike Norvell to be fired, Swinney said it was embarrassing and disrespectful, using the moment to stand up for a coach who has been under heavy scrutiny during a difficult season in Tallahassee.

Norvell has already acknowledged the challenges facing his program while still voicing belief in his players, even as frustration has grown around the team. Swinneys comments added another layer to a matchup that already carried plenty of weight, turning Clemsons victory into a reminder that the pressure around college football can spill far beyond the scoreboard. James Island Caps A Perfect Run As Playoff Matchups Take Shape

James Island finished off a perfect regular season in emphatic fashion, rolling past West Ashley 59-6 behind a ground game that featured two running backs topping 100 yards. The win capped a dominant stretch for the Trojans and came as several other programs across the area also wrapped up region titles, including Berkeley, which claimed its first region championship in eight years with a 62-28 victory over Socastee.

With the regular season now in the books, attention turns quickly to the state playoff bracket, where matchups across multiple classes are beginning to take shape. For teams like James Island and Berkeley, the reward for strong finishes is a clearer path into November, while the rest of the field now waits to see how the opening round lines up and which contenders will be forced into early tests.
