ESPN’s latest jersey-number rankings put three Clemson icons at the top of their classes, giving Tigers fans plenty to smile about. Deshaun Watson, Trevor Lawrence and William “Refrigerator” Perry were each named the best college football player ever to wear their numbers, with Watson taking No.
4, Lawrence claiming No. 16 and Perry owning No. 66.
Watson’s selection at No. 4 fits the kind of run he put together in orange. The two-time Heisman finalist went 32-3 as Clemson’s starter and delivered one of the defining plays in program history when he threw for 420 yards and found Hunter Renfrow for the game-winning touchdown against Alabama to secure the Tigers’ first national title since 1981.
Lawrence’s place at the top of the No. 16 list came after he beat out names like Peyton Manning. At Clemson, he went 34-2 as a starter, won a national championship, threw 90 touchdowns and piled up more than 10,000 passing yards.
Perry’s No. 66 honor reflects just how dominant he was in the middle of the line. The three-time All-American and ACC Player of the Year led all of Division I with 2.45 tackles for loss per game as a senior, and he was already helping drive Clemson toward the 1981 national championship as a freshman.
The Tigers showed up elsewhere in ESPN’s rankings, too. Safety Terry Kinard was listed among the top three for No. 43, behind Troy Polamalu, while Banks McFadden appeared on the “three others” list for No. 66, just behind Perry.

Clemson QB Christopher Vizzina Is Spotlighting What Makes This Program Different
Christopher Vizzina has found a way to use his platform at Clemson for something beyond football. The quarterback recently launched an Instagram account called Drive Your Story, a project built to spotlight leaders across the university and tell the stories of students, alumni and staff who help shape the campus community.
The videos are short, personal interviews, often filmed while playing golf or at places that mean something to the person being featured. It has already drawn more than 1,000 followers in a matter of months, and the fact that Clemson students are the ones shooting and editing everything gives the whole thing a campus feel that fits the programs broader image.
