The Washington Commanders have shifted their focus, and DeAndre Hopkins has moved to the top of the board.
With the Brandon Aiyuk situation cooling off, Washington is now looking hard at the veteran receiver market, and Hopkins has become the clearest name attached to the team’s plans. The former Clemson star, now 34, is viewed by league insiders as someone who would welcome the chance to play alongside rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. For a Commanders team trying to build around a young passing game, that kind of fit carries obvious appeal.
Hopkins’ 2024 numbers with the Ravens were modest - 22 catches for 330 yards and two touchdowns - but the bigger picture is what Washington would be buying. His reputation has long been built on reliable hands, physical play, and the kind of playoff experience that can steady a young offense. Pair that with Terry McLaurin, and the Commanders would have a veteran one-two punch on the outside.
Money also isn’t standing in the way. Washington has more than $43 million in cap space, which gives the front office room to add a proven receiver before camp opens without forcing any difficult financial decisions.
The Aiyuk path, meanwhile, has lost its shine. What once looked like a possible reunion with Daniels has unraveled after the two went at it on social media.
Aiyuk’s reserve-list status and injury history only added to the hesitation, and sources say Washington was never truly committed to a trade anyway. The recent fallout has only deepened the team’s questions about whether he is worth even a one-year flyer.
That leaves Hopkins as the cleanest option. He offers leadership, stability, and a lower-risk path to upgrading the offense. A short-term deal would give Washington a battle-tested target who can help Daniels right away.
Other names are still in the mix if the Commanders fully move on from Aiyuk, including Stefon Diggs and Deebo Samuel. But Hopkins has become the front-runner, and the fit is easy to see. He could even fill a role similar to Deebo Samuel’s in 2025, giving Daniels another dependable option when the game tightens up.
For Tiger fans, the added wrinkle is Hopkins joining McLaurin while rookie slot receiver and fellow Clemson product Antonio Williams learns alongside them. However Washington chooses to move next, the direction is clear: the Commanders want a fast start, and bringing in Hopkins would be a direct move toward that goal.

Clemsons Tight End Room Could Decide How Far Chad Morris Goes
Clemsons push to reshape its tight end room is one of the more interesting subplots around Chad Morris first season back in the offensive coordinator chair. Morris has made it clear the position matters in his version of the offense, especially with a heavier emphasis on the run game and the kind of versatility that lets tight ends line up in more than one spot. Senior Olsen Patt-Henry, redshirt freshman Brooking and Christian Bentancur all fit into that plan, and the Tigers expect to lean on two-tight-end looks often as they try to make the group a real asset instead of just a supporting cast.
Patt-Henry is the most established piece, while Bentancur brings the athletic profile that can stress defenses in the passing game. Brooking is the younger name to watch as the season unfolds, and Clemson also has depth behind that trio with Charlie Johnson, Jack Wolf and Tayveon Wilson in the mix. For a team trying to find the right balance in Morris offense, how quickly that room comes together could tell a lot about how far the scheme can go. [Read more 🡒]
Dabo Swinney Just Landed Near The Top Of A Brutal List
A new national ranking is offering a different kind of spotlight on Dabo Swinney, and it is not the sort Clemson fans are used to seeing. RotoWire put together a list of the most hated college football coaches using social media sentiment and a fan survey, and Swinney landed near the top of it, sitting behind only Lane Kiffin and Deion Sanders.
The ranking says as much about perception as it does about results, which is part of why it stands out for a coach whose Clemson resume includes a long run of success. RotoWires explanation points to Swinneys public stance on NIL and the transfer portal, along with the way some fans view his messaging about how he wins, leaving his place on the list as a reminder that national opinion can look very different from what a home crowd sees.
