Clemson’s 2026 roster has talent, but Dabo Swinney isn’t handing out labels yet.
With the Tigers about three weeks from opening the season against LSU, Swinney took a measured tone at his Tuesday, Aug. 11 news conference when asked whether any players had separated themselves during fall camp. He didn’t point to one breakout name. Instead, he made it clear the evaluation is still in progress.
“Everybody’s just working,” he said. “This is a bunch of nobodies.
We’ll see. We’ll see if anybody becomes somebody as we play some games.”
It was not a shot at his players so much as a reminder that camp praise doesn’t mean much until the games start counting. Clemson still has pieces that show up on preseason lists, including four players on the preseason All-ACC first team. Three of them are on defense: defensive end Will Heldt, linebacker Sammy Brown and cornerback Ashton Hampton.
Brown and Heldt also landed near the top of the voting for preseason ACC player of the year, finishing sixth and eighth, respectively. That honor went to Miami quarterback Darian Mensah.
Even with that recognition, Clemson enters the season with questions hanging over it. The Tigers went 7-6 last year, their fewest wins since 2010, after opening the year ranked No. 6 in the preseason US LBM Coaches Poll. In this year’s ACC preseason poll, they were slotted fourth behind Miami, SMU and Louisville.
Swinney said the roster has a mix of experience and upside, and he’s counting on both to keep pushing.
“We’ve got a mature group with a bunch of competition,” Swinney said on Tuesday. “We’ve got some nice veteran guys that, you know, really care. And then we’ve got some good young talent that’s getting better.”
