Clemson’s quarterback decision for Week 1 is starting to come into focus, and the safest move looks like the smartest one.
All signs point to Christopher Vizzina getting the nod against LSU, a game that already has plenty of heat around it with Lane Kiffin making his first trip in charge of the Tigers and College GameDay headed to Baton Rouge. Clemson’s own quarterback battle has been easy to overlook in that noise, but it matters plenty for Dabo Swinney after a 7-6 season that fell far short of preseason expectations.
The reason this has lingered is simple: Clemson didn’t just lose games last year, it lost a lot of talent to the NFL, including Cade Klubnik, which opened the door for a competition under center. Vizzina was widely viewed as the favorite because of the experience he picked up last season, but freshman Tait Reynolds has forced the issue and made this more than a formality.

If the game were in Clemson, maybe the calculus shifts. In Baton Rouge, it doesn’t.
Vizzina has already shown he can handle real snaps. He made one start last year against SMU and threw for 317 yards and three touchdowns in that game.
Across the season, he appeared in five games and completed 45 of 71 passes for 406 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. That kind of resume is exactly why he looks like the right Week 1 answer.
And this wouldn’t be new territory for Swinney. He’s made this kind of short-term choice before and still ended up changing course later. In 2018, Clemson started Kelly Bryant for four games, including tough road trips to Texas A&M and Georgia Tech, before turning to true freshman Trevor Lawrence once the schedule eased up.
That’s the path that could make the most sense again. Reynolds may eventually be the next big Clemson quarterback, but he doesn’t have to be rushed into the LSU spotlight. Vizzina can take the first shot, then both quarterbacks can get work the following week against Georgia Southern before Clemson heads into ACC play.
