Dabo Swinney Says Two QBs Pull Ahead At Clemson

Clemson's quarterback race narrows as Dabo Swinney reflects on a 'productive' spring, with fresh talent emerging and the defense stepping up.

Clemson's spring game often signals the close of practices, but this year, the Tigers are squeezing in one more workout on Monday before wrapping up with player meetings next week. It was a chance for the coaching staff to take stock of the team's competitive spirit, even if the talent was more evenly distributed than last year.

Throughout the afternoon, Dabo Swinney was vocal, offering praise and critique that echoed through Death Valley. "A little instant accountability right there," he mentioned to reporters, setting the tone for the day.

Swinney's Post-Game Insights

Swinney shared his thoughts on the spring game, highlighting both the positives and areas for growth. "You think we got a sack when it was actually a missed motion or a wrong read," he explained.

"I like to add commentary to create some pressure and call-outs." He noted Braden Wilmes' standout performance when put on the spot, underscoring the importance of mental toughness.

Defensive Developments

Swinney was particularly impressed with the defense, praising the offseason additions and the group's physicality. "We're long, we can run. It's been a physical spring, and we're much improved defensively from last year," he said.

Offensive Growth

On the offensive side, there's been significant learning. "We improved as spring went on. You almost wish for seven more days of practice," Swinney reflected, emphasizing the progress made.

Freshman Receivers Shine

Gordon Sellars III stood out among the freshman receivers, but Swinney noted all are starting to show promise. "They got a ton of reps without our 'Ferraris' out there.

They’ve gone from looking like Pintos to Malibus," he joked. The young receivers are adjusting to the college level, where they're challenged more than in high school.

Quarterback Competition

The quarterback battle was a hot topic. Chris Denson, expected to be a contender, found himself as the fourth option.

Christopher Vizzina leads, with Tait Reynolds closing in. Even Trent Pearman is showing potential as a third-string option.

"It's just the depth chart. CV is one, Tait is two - it's not close," Swinney stated.

Vizzina had a strong spring, working with freshmen, and remains the front-runner. "Tait has elite arm talent and has clearly secured the second spot," Swinney added, expressing pride in Reynolds' progress.

Denson's Future

While Denson is physically gifted, he's struggling with passing. Discussions about a position change are underway.

"If he stays at quarterback, he'll play a role for us. He's too talented not to contribute," Swinney said, acknowledging the tough decisions ahead.

Promising Talent: Polo Anderson

Swinney is excited about Polo Anderson's potential. "He's not where others are yet, but he's a high-school kid in his first semester," Swinney noted. Drawing parallels to past players, he believes Anderson will be ready by the end of summer.

Defensive Standouts

Vic Burley made an impact with a couple of sacks, though evaluating a pass rush in spring games can be tricky. "He's a guy we're counting on," Swinney said, emphasizing Burley's potential.

As Clemson wraps up spring practices, the team is poised for a competitive summer, with key players ready to step up and make their mark.
