Dabo Swinney didn’t need much to make up his mind about Tait Reynolds.
One big performance was enough for the Clemson coach to sound fully sold on his true freshman quarterback, who finally delivered the kind of outing that can change the tone around a season. Reynolds had gone more than a month without throwing a touchdown, but against Florida State he broke through in a major way, tossing two scores and adding another himself on a wild 79-yard run.
Swinney’s reaction left little room for doubt.
"He ain't gonna get worse. He doesn't have good talent.
He's got elite talent," Swinney said about his true freshman star quarterback before going into extreme quarterbacking hyperbole. "I'm not saying he's Joe Montana ... but we're gonna have him for more than one year.
We're gonna build around him."
That’s a strong statement for a quarterback who had been uneven through his first five starts. And it also says plenty about where Swinney stands on the idea that Clemson should be shopping for help in the transfer portal. After Reynolds’ latest outing, that door looks even more shut.
The issue, of course, is that Clemson’s offense has been too limited for too long to ignore. The Tigers are not in the playoff picture in November, and Reynolds’ development has been a big part of that story. He’s clearly getting better, but it has taken time for the production to catch up.
Through eight games of his college career, Reynolds has completed 65.1 percent of his passes for 1,285 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. He has also run 94 times for 249 yards and two scores. That’s a workable stat line, but it also needs context: most of that production came in the rivalry win over a Florida State team that just fired its head coach after the loss.
Against the Seminoles, Reynolds completed 18 of 32 passes for 189 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions. He also added 14 carries for 85 yards and a touchdown. It wasn’t a spotless performance, and there was plenty of ordinary mixed in with the highlights, but Clemson got what it needed.
Now the challenge is consistency.
Football doesn’t give out much credit for one good week if the next one goes sideways. Reynolds hasn’t had a true disaster yet, but that doesn’t mean the floor won’t show up eventually, even for the best quarterbacks in the Power Four. Clemson at least has a chance to keep building some momentum with two winnable games ahead against Syracuse and Georgia Tech.
If Reynolds handles those, the Tigers could carry a lot of confidence into the Friday night trip to Duke. After that comes the Palmetto Bowl against a red-hot South Carolina team. Syracuse and Georgia Tech will compete, but Duke and South Carolina figure to be a different level of test.

Clemson Avoided Worst-Case Fear But Elyjah Thurmon Still Looms Large
Elyjah Thurmons injury scare against Florida State briefly sent Clemson into worst-case territory, but the immediate concern has eased. The Tigers guard was taken to the hospital with worries about a neck injury, then spent one night there before being discharged and returning to Clemson.
Even with that relief, the situation is still far from settled for a team that needs clarity in the backcourt. Thurmons status for the upcoming games remains uncertain while Clemson waits for further medical evaluation, leaving his return timeline very much up in the air. [Read more 🡒]

Clemson Faces A Much Tougher ACC Test Than Fans Might Expect
Clemsons next ACC road trip comes with a little more intrigue than the matchup might have suggested a few weeks ago. The Tigers are set to face Syracuse on Nov. 7 in Syracuse, New York, with a noon kickoff on ESPN2, coming off a win over Florida State as they turn the page to another conference test.
Syracuse has quietly built some momentum of its own, winning its last two games, and the Orange also have a key piece back in place with starting quarterback Steve Angeli returning from injury. For Clemson, that makes this more than just another November trip north, especially with the kind of setting and timing that can make conference games feel a lot tighter than the records might indicate.
