Dabo Swinney has taken a different tack at the start of Clemson’s fall camp: no depth chart, no declared starters, and no special treatment at quarterback.
“I don’t have any starters. I’m just going to tell you there ain’t nobody starting,” Swinney said.
He made it clear that every spot has to be earned on a daily basis.
“Somebody’s going to run out there today because you got to go practice,” Swinney added. “But we’re going to evaluate them every day, and if you run out there first tomorrow, then that’s because you earned it today. Not because we just think you’re supposed to be the best one.”
That approach leaves plenty of room for movement, even if some jobs still look settled. Sammy Brown appears set at linebacker, and Bryant Wesco Jr. looks like a lock at wide receiver. At running back, there’s a sense Swinney may be leaning toward Gideon Davidson over Chris Johnson Jr., though he hasn’t said as much.
The real intrigue sits under center, where Christopher Vizzina and Tait Reynolds are battling for the job. Vizzina has been in the program for years and should be viewed as the front-runner. Reynolds, though, has pushed hard as a true freshman, and that makes this a legitimate competition rather than a formality.
If Swinney is serious about turning every spot into an open fight, that could work in Reynolds’ favor. The message is simple: nothing is handed out.
For a freshman who was in high school a year ago, that’s a chance to force the issue. For Vizzina, who spent his time behind Cade Klubnik, it means the job he may have been waiting for is far from secure.
That’s where Swinney’s new approach becomes tricky. A coach can preach competition all day, but quarterback decisions still carry the most weight.
Clemson has lived through uneven play at the position over the last half-decade, and the margin for error there is thin. If Reynolds is the better option, Swinney has to be willing to make that move quickly.
This wouldn’t be unfamiliar territory for him. Cole Stoudt gave way to Deshaun Watson in 2014, and Kelly Bryant yielded to Trevor Lawrence in 2018. Bryant had already led Clemson to the College Football Playoff in 2017 before Lawrence took over.
So while Swinney’s no-depth-chart stance may look like gamesmanship, it also sends a broader message to the roster. Everyone has to prove it.
The upside is a tougher, more competitive team. The risk is making the wrong call at quarterback.
If Vizzina wins the job, Clemson moves forward. If Reynolds is better, Swinney will need to trust what he sees and hand the offense to the freshman.
