Dabo Swinney Had A Strong Reaction To Mike Norvells Firing

Clemson's Dabo Swinney criticizes the disrespectful manner of Mike Norvell's firing at Florida State, highlighting the importance of dignity in expressing dissatisfaction.

Dabo Swinney didn’t just brush off the banner that called for Mike Norvell’s firing at Florida State. He went after it.

After Clemson beat Florida State on Oct. 31, the Tigers coach said the message flown above Doak Campbell Stadium was “embarrassing.” The banner, which appeared before the game, targeted Norvell and also called for FSU Board of Trustees Chairman Peter Collins to be fired, even though his position is not firable. It also misspelled Norvell’s last name.

Swinney said on Nov. 3 that he understood the reality of coaching - and why Norvell was let go after Florida State’s 3-5 start in the 2026 season - but he drew a hard line on how it was handled.

“That doesn’t mean you can’t do things with dignity,” Swinney said in a press conference for Clemson’s Week 10 game against Syracuse. “It was just disappointing to see that.

It’s not good for recruiting. It’s not good for those players.

“You don’t have to like the coach. You can fire the coach and all that stuff.

I get all of that, but destroying people and trying to humiliate people ... I just think we dehumanize so many things in this profession in the name of whatever.

It’s just not good. I don’t think it’s good for anything.”

He later added that the business side of coaching leaves little room for excuses.

“Everybody, we all understand in this business. That’s just the way it is.

We’ve got to win,” Swinney said. “Anybody can win on any given day, but none of us are expected or allowed to lose.

Anybody can beat anybody, but you better not lose. That’s just kind of how it is.

That’s just the life we chose, and he understands that.”

Swinney had already made his feelings clear right after Clemson’s win. He said whoever was behind the banner should be “ashamed” and called the scene above the stadium “embarrassing ...

Florida State’s better than that,” adding, “That’s not good for these kids. It’s not good for them.

Listen, I get it. Everybody’s got contracts and all this type of stuff, but that bothered me, and they didn’t even spell his name right.

Didn’t even have the freaking R.

“It’s just disrespectful. Mike Norvell’s a good man.

You ain’t gotta like him as a football coach. You ain’t gotta like me as a football coach.

That’s a good man right there. He’s a good man, and he’s a hell of a football coach.”

Norvell, a friend of Swinney’s, was fired the next day. Swinney coached against him six times during Norvell’s run at Florida State and went 5-1 in those matchups. Norvell finished 41-39 with the Seminoles from 2020-26 and won an ACC championship in 2023.

Clemson, now 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the ACC, visits Syracuse on Nov. 7 at noon on ESPN2.

Florida States Coaching Search Just Took A Notable Turn

Florida States coaching search has already become one of the more closely watched storylines in the sport after the Seminoles moved on from Mike Norvell following seven seasons. Rick Stockstill has been handed the interim job, and the timing of the change says plenty about how quickly the school wants to reset after a tenure that ended with a 41-39 record and just 10 wins over the past three years.

One name that surfaced almost immediately was Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz, but he quickly shut that down and said his attention is on the Tigers upcoming game against Texas. For Clemson fans, it is another reminder that the ACCs power structure could be shifting again, with Florida State now trying to chart its next move while the search begins to take shape around the country. Clemson Is Saying Goodbye To Armon Mason Under Tough Circumstances

Armon Masons Clemson career is ending the hard way, with the veteran defensive end announcing his medical retirement from football after a run of injuries that kept interrupting what had once looked like a promising path. A sixth-year player and the son of late NBA standout Anthony Mason, he had already missed two of the past three seasons, a frustrating stretch that made it increasingly difficult to get any real momentum on the field.

Mason still plans to stay with the Tigers through Senior Day before stepping away from the sport for good, giving Clemson one more chance to recognize a player who battled through far more than most. For a program that has watched him fight to keep coming back, his exit is as much about resilience as it is about the injuries that ultimately forced the decision. [Read more 🡒]

Clemsons Syracuse Test Just Got Tougher Than Fans Expected

Clemsons trip to Syracuse was already shaping up as a tricky ACC road test, and Dabo Swinneys latest injury update only adds to the challenge. The Tigers are dealing with several key absences up front and on defense, with guard Elyjah Thurmon and center Harris Sewell both set to miss time, the latter needing minor surgery. True freshman Grant Wise is now in line to start at center, a significant adjustment for a unit trying to hold together in a tough spot on the schedule.

The changes do not stop there. Starting running back Gideon Davidson is expected to sit out the upcoming game, which pushes Jarvis Green into the lead role in the backfield, while linebacker Kobe McCloud is also unavailable and will open more snaps for Fletcher Cothran. For Clemson, the concern is not just who is out, but how quickly the replacements can settle in against a Syracuse team that figures to test the Tigers depth in a hurry. [Read more 🡒]
