Week 1 of the 2026 college football season opens with a heavyweight matchup in Baton Rouge, La., where LSU and Clemson will square off in what already feels like a defining early test for both programs.
For LSU, the spotlight is on the Lane Kiffin era. He arrives after a six-year run at Ole Miss that produced a 55-19 record and ended with the Rebels in the College Football Playoff last season. "Lane Kiffin knows Dabo Swinney is done; he knows Clemson is inept, and he is spending whatever time he's not dealing with you and me and Pat McAfee and Stephen A. Smith, he's working on the Ole Miss game," Finebaum said.
That’s a pointed line, especially given Swinney’s track record. He has won two national championships and nine ACC titles at Clemson, a level of success that still matters even as the questions around the program have grown louder.
The problem for Clemson is how sharply last season undercut the expectations that came with it. A team that started the year with real championship dreams finished far outside that conversation, and now Swinney is being asked to prove that 2025 was just a stumble, not the start of something worse.
That’s why the LSU game matters so much for Clemson. A loss would only turn up the heat on Swinney.
A strong showing, though, would give the Tigers a chance to push back against the idea that last year defined them. For Swinney, the opener is about more than shaking off an ugly season - it’s about showing Clemson still has a future with him in charge.
