Clemson came into the season with hopes that Matt Luke had built a line sturdy enough to hold up in the biggest spots. One snap against LSU blew a hole through that idea.
Left tackle Brayden Jacobs, who was viewed as the best piece on Luke’s revamped front, turned in the kind of rep that summed up Clemson’s night. On the play, Jacobs and guard Elyjah Thurmon ended up turning their backs on each other. Thurmon at least made an effort to block someone, while Jacobs was left standing there as LSU linebacker Whit Weeks raced untouched into the backfield and dumped Clemson running back Gideon Davidson well behind the line of scrimmage.
The question after that sequence was simple: what exactly was supposed to happen there?

That one snap fit the bigger problem for Clemson. The Tigers were never in control up front, and the numbers backed it up.
Clemson managed just 1.5 yards per rush, while LSU rolled to 5.3 on the ground. The gap in the trenches was a major reason the game tilted the way it did, and it was clear early that Clemson was getting pushed around.
The run game never found any rhythm, either. Clemson finished with 26 carries for 40 yards on Saturday night, far short of what Chad Morris would want from an offense that needs to lean on the ground game. When the line is losing that badly, there’s no way to stay on schedule, much less keep things close.
That’s what makes Jacobs’ missed assignment sting even more. Luke is not new to this job, and Clemson brought him in expecting real progress from a unit that was supposed to be a strength. Instead, the Tigers looked shaky and out of sorts, and the line is now looking more like a problem than an answer.
There’s also the uncomfortable question of what LSU may have exposed for future opponents to study. Miami is coming in a few weeks, though the Hurricanes still have their own pass-rush issues to sort out. Even so, Clemson can’t be thrilled with how badly things snowballed against LSU, especially with its top lineman struggling like that.
The immediate chance to reset comes next week against Georgia Southern in the home opener. Clay Helton has his team organized, but he’s working with a Sun Belt program now.
Clemson should have a cleaner chance to settle down, get something going up front, and maybe carry enough momentum into the matchup with the North Carolina Tar Heels two weeks later. If not, the Tigers could be staring at a very long season.
