Clemson’s home opener against Georgia Southern didn’t exactly come wrapped in fireworks, but it did give the Tigers a chance to show a little resolve after the Week 1 loss to No. 8 LSU.
The game was pushed back by a two-hour lightning delay, didn’t kick off until 9:30 p.m. EDT, and turned into a sluggish 19-7 Clemson win in a matchup where both offenses spent most of the night fighting themselves.
Even in a game with only two touchdowns total, there were a few clear takeaways for Clemson - good and bad.
Antonio Williams was the biggest bright spot. After catching four passes for 31 yards in the opener, he erupted against Georgia Southern with seven receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown. The 6-foot-3 wideout was the best player on the field, plain and simple, and he also started to build some real chemistry with Tait Reynolds, who delivered five of his seven catches.
On the defensive side, Will Heldt looked like the force Clemson expected to see right away. The 6-foot-6 senior was quiet in Week 1, finishing with just four tackles while the Tigers gave up more than 300 rushing yards and had trouble setting the edge. Against Georgia Southern, he flipped the script with three tackles for loss and two sacks, leading Clemson in both categories.
The quarterback picture also shifted again. Christopher Vizzina opened the game as the starter and got Clemson’s only touchdown drive rolling in the first quarter, finishing that march with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Moore.
But his night unraveled quickly after he threw an interception on a deep ball and got hurt on the same play. That opened the door for Reynolds, who took over and handled the rest of the night.
Reynolds still has plenty of growing to do, but he made the most of the opportunity. The true freshman completed 16 of 27 passes for 178 yards and added 38 yards on the ground. He also showed poise under pressure with a handful of throws that stood out in a game where Clemson needed someone to steady the offense.
Vizzina’s injury is the part Clemson will be watching closest. The extent of it remains unknown, but it came at the worst possible time for a quarterback trying to win the job.
There were also more concerns up front. The offensive line was already under a microscope after the LSU game, when Clemson managed just 145 total yards and 40 rushing yards on 26 carries.
Getting fifth-year Collin Sadler back from injury didn’t change the overall picture much. The line was flagged six times and didn’t bring much force at the line of scrimmage.
Clemson did finish with 150 rushing yards on 39 carries, but that number doesn’t tell the whole story.
And then there’s the running back room, where Adam Davidson still hasn’t made the leap Clemson was hoping for. After flashing in limited work behind now-Baltimore Ravens running back Adam Randall in 2025, the sophomore entered this season with momentum.
He hasn’t carried it over yet. Against LSU, he had seven touches for 20 yards.
Against Georgia Southern, his 14 carries produced 62 yards, but that line was boosted by a 21-yard garbage-time run.
Chris Johnson Jr., meanwhile, was the back who actually looked lively. The SMU transfer averaged nearly eight yards per carry and finished with 53 yards, which could earn him a larger role once ACC play begins next weekend.
