Clemsons Opener Just Became A Test Of Dabos Whole Message

Deck: Paul Finebaum's sharp criticism of Dabo Swinney's leadership sparks debate over Clemson's future and their chances of redemption this season.

Paul Finebaum didn’t waste much time turning Dabo Swinney’s own words back on Clemson.

During a Friday appearance on The Mac & Bone Show on Sports Radio WFNZ in Charlotte, Finebaum took aim at Swinney’s “bunch of nobodies” message and used it as fresh ammunition in his criticism of the Tigers. He said Clemson is not headed for a full collapse, but he also doesn’t see a quick rebound under Swinney.

“Dabo Swinney thought he knew better than any coach in college football and kept doing his old way, and it didn't work,” Finebaum said. “He finally adapted, but the problem is others moved ahead of him ...

He did the stupid typical Dabo 'that we're a bunch of nobodies.' Last year, Clemson had arguably the most talented team in the country, and they did nothing with it.

They went 7-6. I still can't quite figure it out.”

Finebaum also said he wouldn’t be shocked if Clemson’s administration eventually moved on from Swinney after another season around .500. That would be a massive decision, though Swinney’s buyout sits at $57 million, so any real change would come with a steep price.

The bigger issue for Clemson right now is that Swinney’s message has become an easy target. What was meant as a rallying point for the team has quickly become something outsiders can weaponize, and Finebaum did exactly that.

Last season’s disappointment still hangs over the program. Clemson finished 7-6 overall and 4-4 in ACC play, a result that landed far short of what many expected from a roster loaded with talent. A long list of players also moved on to the next level after that season, which only adds to the sense that the Tigers have to prove themselves all over again.

Swinney’s “bunch of nobodies” label is still new enough that the broader college football audience hasn’t had time to learn all the names behind it. Sammy Brown, Gideon Davidson, Ashton Hampton, and Bryant Wesco Jr. are part of that group, while Clemson still has to sort out who will be leading the offense between Christopher Vizzina and Tait Reynolds.

All of that makes the opener at LSU in Baton Rouge even more important. The Week 1 matchup gives Clemson an immediate shot to answer for last year and to show whether this version of the Tigers can handle the spotlight. It also sets up a game that will draw plenty of national attention, with Lane Kiffin now part of the conversation.

For Swinney, the challenge is clear: get Clemson ready without giving critics more to feast on. Finebaum is clearly waiting for the Tigers to stumble again, but Clemson has a chance to flip the script fast if it can win at LSU.

Clemson Suddenly Has A Real Question At Wide Receiver

Clemsons receiver room picked up an unexpected layer of uncertainty in the middle of fall camp when Cole Turner stopped practicing and stepped away from the program to attend to personal matters, according to team sources. Turner is still listed on the official roster, but his absence has already become part of the conversation as the Tigers sort out their depth and roles at wide receiver heading into the season.

For a position group that can shift quickly in August, losing a player who had been around the program since camp opened changes the feel of the room even if the door remains open for a later return. Clemson is treating the situation with patience for now, and there is still a chance Turner could come back before the season ends, but for the moment the Tigers are left planning without knowing when, or if, hell be back on the field. Clemson Still Has One Huge Offensive Line Question Before LSU

Less than three weeks before Clemson opens against LSU, the offensive line is still a work in progress after four starters moved on from last season. Senior center Harris Sewell and fifth-year guard Collin Sadler have emerged as the most settled pieces, giving the Tigers at least a foundation in the middle, but the rest of the unit is still being sorted out as camp continues.

The staff has kept moving players around at tackle and guard while looking for the right mix, which makes this one of the more important lingering questions on the roster. Clemson is also encouraged by senior running back Jarvis Green, who has shown promise in preseason scrimmages after coming back from a knee injury, and Dabo Swinney has pointed to the value of working through the summer heat as another part of the preparation.
