Clemson’s ACC opener arrives with more questions than answers, and the most glaring one is under center. The Tigers are turning to true freshman Tait Reynolds to start Saturday against North Carolina, a move that comes after the quarterback spot already shifted from Christopher Vizzina. Clemson has opened the year 1-1, and the margin for error is already thin with a crucial three-game stretch underway.
The timing matters. Clemson gets two winnable games over the next two weeks before Miami visits for what looms as a major ACC showdown.
If the Tigers don’t make real progress before then, they could be staring at a second straight 1-3 start in 2026. Right now, that possibility feels very much on the table.
North Carolina, meanwhile, enters at 2-0 and looks more stable in Bill Belichick’s second season than it did a year ago. The Tar Heels beat TCU to open the season in Dublin and followed that up by handling ETSU at home. That’s a very different picture from last October, when Clemson went to Chapel Hill and scored 28 points before the first quarter was over against a UNC team that was a complete mess in Belichick’s first season.
Clemson’s own start has been uneven at best. The Tigers were blown out at LSU in the opener, then returned home and had to grind out their first win against Georgia Southern. The offense has already gone through its share of twists, and Reynolds now gets the ball as ACC play begins.
There’s a real sense around the program that this change was coming eventually, even if it arrived earlier than expected. Reynolds has played in both games, though calling his presence a spark would be generous based on what Clemson has produced offensively. Still, he gives the Tigers a new look, and the hope is that he can at least help spread the ball around to a group that still has skill-position talent.
The problem is what’s happening up front and what awaits on the other side. If Reynolds is going to settle in quickly, he’ll have to do it behind an offensive line that hasn’t offered much protection. Against a physical Belichick defense, that could become a long afternoon.
