LSU’s roster for Saturday’s Week 1 showdown with Clemson came in on Friday, and the two names at the center of the eligibility fight were missing. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, former NFL players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris were not included, which means they will not play this weekend.
That’s a notable turn after a Louisiana judge ruled in their favor on Thursday, seemingly opening the door for both players to suit up. For now, though, LSU has not made the move to add them.
The situation has already stirred plenty of debate across college football. Wright and Harris chose to return to the college game after signing NFL contracts and spending time in NFL training camps, and the reaction outside LSU has largely been against the move.
Clemson also made its stance known on Friday, telling LSU that using Wright and Harris could amount to a breach of contract, even as it said it still intended to play the game. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney went further earlier this week, calling the idea of former NFL players trying to return to college embarrassing.
Thamel noted that LSU could still add both players later in the season. The Tigers submitted a roster with 103 players, leaving room for two more additions if the school chooses to keep pushing the issue.
Wright and Harris both played for LSU’s first-year head coach Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss, and for now they’ll have to wait before they can take the field for him at LSU.
