Clemson’s schedule has already turned into a string of late starts, and Friday night at Cal could push it even further into the dark.
The Tigers have had two primetime kicks and one early afternoon game through the first three weeks, and all three were affected by lightning in the area. Now Clemson is headed to Berkeley for a 10:30 p.m. ET kickoff on Friday night, and if it wins that game, the reward could be another night stage waiting back home against Miami in Week 5.
That possibility was raised Monday by The State’s Chapel Fowler, who noted that a Clemson win at Cal would send the odds of a primetime Miami game soaring. The ACC still has not locked in a kickoff time for Clemson-Miami, choosing instead to place it under a “six-day hold,” just as it has for Notre Dame at North Carolina. UNC is on a bye this week, which leaves Clemson as the team holding the cards.

The irony here is hard to miss. Fans spend years begging for more night games, and Clemson is now barreling toward what could be its third primetime start or later in four weeks. Add in more than six hours of weather delays already this season, and the appeal of a noon kickoff starts to make a lot more sense.
Miami’s attention is at least partly elsewhere for now, with Central Michigan on deck in Week 4. But a trip to Death Valley is never simple, and Clemson is coming off a bizarre stretch of late starts and weather interruptions that has already made its schedule feel out of sync.
The Hurricanes also know what a late-night West Coast trip can turn into. Two years ago, Miami nearly dropped a similar early-season game at Cal before escaping with a 39-38 win. That result is a reminder that Berkeley can be a tricky place for anyone making the cross-country trip, even a team with ACC aspirations.
If Clemson handles Cal, the Tigers may once again become the conference’s most useful late-night draw. Even in seasons when they are not at their best, they still pull stronger numbers than most teams in the league, and the ACC knows it. That makes Clemson a major part of the conference’s TV value, especially when the schedule starts to bend around them.
So Clemson is stuck in a strange spot: win at Cal, and it could mean another late night. Lose, and the Miami game probably loses some of its shine. Either way, the Tigers may need to get comfortable living on West Coast time.
