Clemson’s home opener comes with a familiar price tag.
The Tigers will pay Georgia Southern a guarantee amount of $1.5 million for Saturday night’s game at Memorial Stadium, according to a contract obtained by The State through a public records request. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on the ACC Network, and Clemson is coming off a 51-10 loss to No. 11 LSU.
It’s the kind of setup that’s become routine for Power 4 programs: bring in a Group of 5 opponent, write a flat check, and play the non-conference game. In Clemson’s case, the school must pay Georgia Southern athletics the $1.5 million by Feb.
15, 2027. That matches the amount Clemson paid Troy for a 2025 non-conference game.
Clemson enters the matchup favored by 21 points against the Sun Belt team from Statesboro, Georgia. Saturday will be only the second meeting between the programs. The Tigers won the first one, 38-7, at home in 2018.
Georgia Southern has managed two upset wins over Power 4 teams in its history since moving to the FBS level in 2014. The Eagles knocked off Florida in The Swamp as a four-touchdown underdog in 2013, when they were still an FCS program, and beat Nebraska at home in 2022.
This year’s Georgia Southern team is led by quarterback Max Johnson, a seventh-year veteran who has also played at LSU, Texas A&M and UNC. Johnson threw for 281 yards in the Eagles’ season-opening win against FCS Charleston Southern.
The contract, signed in 2021, also spells out several game-day details. Clemson gave Georgia Southern 2,500 free tickets to sell to its fans, with any unused tickets due back by July 1. Georgia Southern’s band, cheerleaders and mascot can attend free of charge.
If either school had canceled the game more than a year but less than two years before the scheduled date, the canceling school would have owed a $750,000 fee. If the cancellation came within a year of kickoff, that number would have doubled to $1.5 million.
Georgia Southern can also request a walkthrough at Memorial Stadium on Friday between 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Clemson will provide 60 team bench area passes, 16 all access passes, eight coaches’ booth passes and six team/coaches video passes. The Eagles also received parking passes for one equipment truck, four buses and six cars.
