Clemsons Defensive Line Is Getting A Return Fans Have Waited On

With the return of standout defensive tackle Kourtney Kelly, Clemson's defense looks to rebound and strengthen their lineup against Charleston Southern.

Clemson’s interior defensive line is about to get a jolt.

After spending the start of the 2026 season sidelined by a torn ACL, transfer defensive tackle Kourtney Kelly is expected to return this weekend against Charleston Southern. Head coach Dabo Swinney has been pointing toward that possibility for weeks, and he said the Tigers have already started easing Kelly back into the mix.

“We kind of ramped him up last week,” he said. “He’s been getting competitive work, and so that’s got a chance to be a good shot in the arm for us down the stretch.”

That kind of reinforcement matters for a group that has not exactly been one of Clemson’s liveliest units so far. Kelly’s return should give the Tigers another body up front, and one with a chance to matter right away once he’s fully healthy.

Junior lineman Champ Thompson has seen the work Kelly has put in first-hand. The two worked together early on before Kelly’s injury, and Thompson said the comeback has been no small thing to watch.

“It’s awesome,” Thompson said. “It was awesome to see him put in the work and be able to try to get back as fast as he could.”

Kelly, a junior, was Clemson’s first transfer pickup in the 2026 cycle. The three-star transfer arrived from West Georgia, where he logged 17 tackles, four sacks and a fumble recovery in 12 games.

He redshirted in 2024. When he was healthy earlier this season, he drew attention as one of the Tigers’ most promising additions from the offseason.

Now, in Clemson’s sixth game of the year, that return appears close. The expectation is that fans will see Kelly taking snaps against Charleston Southern this weekend.

“I feel like he would definitely have an impact and can definitely help our defense out in that area,” Thompson said.

Swinney sounded confident too.

“He’s doing really good,” Swinney added. “We expect him to play.”

Kickoff at Memorial Stadium is set for noon, and the game will be shown on the ACC Network.

Clemsons New Depth Chart Sends A Clear Message Up Front

Clemsons bye week brought a few notable tweaks to the depth chart, and the clearest change came up front on offense. Offensive line coach Matt Luke moved Easton Ware into the starting role at right guard over Ronan OConnell, a shift that points to the staff continuing to sort out the best combination before the Tigers face Charleston Southern.

There were also some fresh wrinkles on defense, where Darien Mayo moved into a co-starter role at interior defensive line and Champ Thompson was elevated to co-starter at defensive tackle. Head coach Dabo Swinney said both players have drawn attention for their performances and health status, another sign that Clemson is still fine-tuning the rotation even with a lighter matchup ahead. Clemson Has Little Margin For Error Entering A Crucial Early Stretch

Clemson entered the season with a respectful but cautious nod from the ACC, landing sixth in the preseason poll behind five other teams with 623 points. There is enough talent on the roster to keep the Tigers in the conversation, but the early outlook is complicated by injuries to key players Zac Foster and Carter Welling as both work back from torn ACLs. Add in a freshman guard like Harris Reynolds, who even drew a Preseason ACC Rookie of the Year vote, and there is intrigue around how quickly this group can find its footing.

The challenge now is that Clemson does not have much room to stumble while the schedule is still offering chances to build a postseason case. Its non-conference slate is going to matter a great deal for NCAA Tournament positioning, especially with the ACC projected to be a grind from top to bottom. For a team trying to balance patience with urgency, the opening stretch will say a lot about how much margin the Tigers really have. [Read more 🡒]

Clemsons Playoff Push May Hinge On These Second-Half Turnarounds

Through six weeks of the 2026 season, Clemson sits at 3-2 overall and 2-1 in ACC play, which is enough to keep the playoff conversation alive but also enough to show how thin the margin for error has become. The defense has had bright spots, and linebacker Jeremiah Alexander has been one of the steadier contributors, while Gideon Davidson has settled into the lead-back role as the offense looks for more consistency around him.

The bigger concern remains up front, where the offensive line has struggled and Brayden Jacobs has been part of that uneven start. Clemson also needs more from players such as Chris Johnson Jr. if the second half is going to look different from the first, because the Tigers path from here depends on enough improvement across the roster to turn a decent record into something more convincing.
