Clemson's Chris Denson Stuns With Game-Changing Potential

As Clemson's quarterback competition heats up, Chris Denson emerges as a dynamic challenger poised to redefine the starting lineup.

In the race for Clemson’s starting quarterback position, Christopher Vizzina might be considered the “safe” choice, but Chris Denson is the electrifying contender ready to shake things up. While Vizzina, an 18-year-old freshman from Plant City, Florida, garners national attention, Denson is quietly making his presence felt in spring practice.

Denson is no longer just a scout-team player; he’s emerging as a true contender for the starting role. Last November, he showcased his potential against Furman, rushing for an impressive 108 yards on just seven carries. Head Coach Dabo Swinney didn’t hold back his praise, highlighting Denson’s explosive athleticism and noting significant improvement in his quarterback skills.

Swinney emphasizes Denson’s dynamic running ability, especially during live practices where his talent truly shines. The connection with new QBs coach and Clemson legend Tajh Boyd has been pivotal, with Denson being described as “Tajh’s project,” and it’s clearly paying off. Denson acknowledges his need for growth, particularly in passing, and is committed to daily improvement.

Physically, Denson has transformed from a 190-pound freshman to nearly 200 pounds, aiming for 205 by fall. His gratitude towards the nutrition staff is evident, as he views this goal as attainable.

Despite Vizzina being in the "pole position," Swinney describes the quarterback room as one filled with “unbelievable strain” and “fierce competition.” Denson isn’t fazed by the experience of his peers. His mindset is all about collective improvement:

“All those guys in the room, we are all fighting for that starting job. You know, myself, CV, Brock, Tate, Trent - it’s my way of saying, me, we’re all in it for it.

You know what it is all about? And I just feel like at the end of the day, it’s going to improve us all, no matter who runs out there first.”

As the Orange and White Spring Game approaches on March 28, if Denson continues to impress, the “pole position” might just see a change in leadership.
