Clemson’s 2027 football schedule looks like a break on paper, but the ACC’s latest setup doesn’t hand the Tigers much of anything.
Yes, Clemson is the only team in the league set to play eight conference games while everyone else plays nine. And yes, that means the Tigers get one fewer ACC date than the rest of the conference. But the catch is sitting right there in the fine print: league rules require every team to face at least 10 Power Four opponents each year, and Clemson’s path to that number is anything but soft.
The Tigers already have South Carolina as a permanent SEC rival, and they’ll also host Notre Dame at Death Valley on Oct. 30, 2027. With both of those programs having been playoff-caliber recently, that nonconference slate does plenty of damage on its own.
Clemson’s known 2027 opponents already paint a pretty clear picture. The Tigers are scheduled to host Georgia State on Aug.
28, Wofford on Sept. 11, and Notre Dame on Oct. 3, while also heading to Columbia to face South Carolina on Nov. 27.
The exact dates for the ACC games still haven’t been set, but the direction of the schedule is obvious: after Week 2, Clemson will be living almost entirely in Power Four territory.
The conference slate itself also shifts the challenge. Clemson is effectively trading LSU for Notre Dame, Syracuse for Boston College, Cal for Stanford, Duke for Wake Forest, and North Carolina for North Carolina State.
Florida State and Virginia Tech remain on the list, while Louisville and SMU come in to replace Miami and Georgia Tech in some form. It is a tougher draw, plain and simple.
That leaves Clemson with very little room to ease into the year. From the middle of September onward, the Tigers will be grinding through Power Four opponents only. Even with just eight ACC games, the margin for error looks thin.
There is at least a silver lining if you want to call it that: there are plenty of chances for big wins on this schedule. Louisville, Notre Dame, and SMU could all be top-25 teams again.
Virginia Tech might be on that kind of track in Year 2 under James Franklin. South Carolina could be strong as well.
So while Clemson is the lone ACC team getting eight league games in 2027, that hardly means the Tigers are catching a lucky break. Plenty of other teams will have Notre Dame on the schedule, but most won’t also be dealing with an annual SEC opponent. Florida State, Georgia Tech, and Louisville do, and Clemson does too.
In the end, the schedule only gets kinder if Clemson gets better.
