Clemson’s game against North Carolina came to a halt late in the fourth quarter Saturday night after Memorial Stadium announced a lightning warning with lightning detected within eight miles.
No formal delay had been announced and no restart time was available. The public address announcer only said lightning had been detected and asked fans to leave their seats. Littlejohn Coliseum and the Fike Recreation Center were opened as additional shelters for fans.
At the time play stopped, Clemson was trailing North Carolina 17-15 with 8:11 remaining. The Tar Heels were in the middle of a drive, sitting at the seven-yard line for second-and-goal after moving 57 yards on nine plays.
The weather stoppage marked Clemson’s third weather delay in as many games this season, its fifth in the last two seasons and the fourth at home over that same stretch.
A storm cell was moving south toward Clemson from North Carolina, and The Weather Channel was calling for thunderstorms in the area until at least 7 p.m.
Clemson’s previous two weather delays both stretched past two hours. The Sept. 5 opener against LSU was pushed from a 7:30 p.m. kickoff to 9:40 p.m., while the Georgia Southern game was delayed from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Both finished after midnight on Sunday for the East Coast.
North Carolina’s offense had already shown it could get rolling early. The Tar Heels scored on three of their first four drives before going on to punt on four of their next five possessions.
The delay arrived at a tricky moment for both teams. North Carolina was pressing for more points while Clemson had just fought back from a 17-6 deficit to trim the margin to 17-15 in the second half. The Tigers’ crowd had started to get more involved, and how much of that energy would still be there once play resumed was unclear.
