Clemson heads home Saturday night looking to steady itself after a rough start, and the setup is straightforward: Georgia Southern comes to Memorial Stadium for the Tigers’ home opener at 7:30 p.m. on ACCN.
The betting market still expects Clemson to handle business. The Tigers are listed as 20.5-point favorites at VegasInsider.com’s consensus line, down from an opening number of 26.5. ESPN’s analytics give Clemson an 88.3% chance to win.
There are also a couple of injury notes worth watching. Clemson doesn’t have to publish an availability report for this non-conference matchup, but Dabo Swinney did offer two important updates.
Defensive tackle Markus Strong, the Oklahoma transfer, is done for the season after suffering a lower-leg injury against LSU. On the other side of the ledger, offensive lineman Collin Sadler is healthy and expected to return after sitting out Week 1.
Weather could play a role, too. AccuWeather calls for a “mostly cloudy and humid” night in Clemson, with temperatures around 80 degrees at kickoff and dipping into the mid-70s later on. There’s a 55% chance of rain and a 33% chance of thunderstorms, so another weather delay is at least on the table.
As for what Clemson needs from this one, the Tigers are trying to avoid a repeat of last week’s scramble against Troy. After getting blown out at LSU, Clemson needed a 24-point second-half surge just to escape an upset at home. This one should not require that kind of drama.
The comparison to last season is hard to miss. In 2024, Clemson got rolled by No.
1 Georgia in its opener, then bounced back with a 66-20 win over App State. This time, the Tigers opened with a close loss at LSU and followed it with the tense finish against Troy.
Saturday doesn’t figure to be nearly as stressful as that, but it also doesn’t project as the kind of runaway that calms everybody down in a hurry.
There is still plenty of talent here, even if the LSU loss raised real questions about where the program stands. Clemson has also been reliable against teams outside the power conferences under Swinney, going 32-1 in those games.
Georgia Southern does have one reason to believe it can make things uncomfortable. Veteran quarterback Max Johnson gives the Eagles a chance to stay in the fight, though it’s fair to wonder how much can really be taken from a Week 1 win against an FCS opponent. Clay Helton’s run at Georgia Southern has had its moments, but the overall record sits at 28-25 in four-plus seasons.
The expectation here is for Clemson to be solid rather than spectacular, lean on a better run game and the primetime setting, and pull away late after a slow start. The quarterback competition remains part of the backdrop, but the Tigers should still finish this one in control.
